Default Hunting stories and pics? Here's mine...

The general rifle season in Montana ends this weekend. I got lucky last week, had the day off for Veteran's Day and found myself in the foothills above the Blackfoot Valley. And then I got really lucky by spotting this beauty of a whitetail buck bedded under a tree on a hillside 175 yards away. He saw me too, but was far enough away that he wasn't going to move. I sat down and got comfortable, watched him watch me for a little while as I weighed my options and tried to figure out whether it was a whitetail or mule deer buck. His rack was wide enough to make question, and I could not harvest mule deer in that district. He turned his head and I could identify him as a whitetail and certainly a good deer, nice enough to take the shot and commit to the climb down and then back up to get it.

This is by far the best buck I've even had the chance to harvest. I was solo that day and wow...it was a big job. I left everything I had out there and could barely stand up straight the next day. A really amazing experience, taking a big beautiful animal like this. So many emotions. By amazing I mean unique, genuine. It puts a lot into perspective.

I'd love hear your hunting story. Shoot away!

Excellent hunt and buck John! I was able to relate with your story because when I hunted whitetail I kept a tent camp 3.5 miles from the nearest improved road & 1.75 from any trail. People may wonder how in the heck you can claim to do that in Pennsylvania and for those folks I have one word, Cartography.

You've taken a beautiful animal and I remember well the flood of emotions that come at such times. I also remember having to leave all behind to pack out the deer and how exhausted a man can get when doing all of that.

Wonderful result to what I know was a day you will never forget!

Dean,

Curious about the rifle you used. Grew up on Jack O'Conner.

Thanks

John: Congrats on a great hunt and beautiful buck! I can only imagine the effort it took to get that big guy back to the truck.

Nice buck dean. I didnt get a chance to head up to the sun river where I normally go but I shot an antelope buck. Not to great of a story. Spotted the herd, crawled over a hill and shot one bullet into the boiler room and he was done.

Thanks guys. It was a helluva a deal. The adrenalin rush when I finally cut his blood trail was pretty amazing, scary almost. When I found him in the young pine thicket a strange calm set in.

imixer: Just this summer my dad gave me the rifle, he inherited from his uncle. It's a late 60's Remington 760 Game Master - a .30-06 pump action. I was really pleased to put it to use this fall, and so was my old man.

mladen: I skinned the hind quarter and stretched a good sized piece right away. I'm definitely going to go slow when I skin the rest of it and try to save some different patches, there is a lot of variety when you have an entire hide. I have to read up on how to tan the inside and keep the hair intact. If anyone has experience, I'd love to hear it.

Good luck Boz, I've heard there are some bruisers out your way.

And Troy, congrats on the speedgoat! You make it sound easy, but I know it's not.

Thanks again.

Very nice John. Congratulations. I hope you can save some steaks for the Big Horn trip next year. How big was it? The feeling you get when you take such a great animal can't be explained, it can only be experienced by the hunter. Close your eyes and cherish every moment of the hunt John. I wish I could have been there to give you a hand in the recovery and I would pay $$$$ to have seen the look on your face upon the recovery. I hope that you and your family have a great Thanksgiving.

Take care,
Dan

Thanks buddy. I'll save a big back strap for fishin' camp next year. I don't have a scale, but I'll say he is big enough! I had to cut it two hang it in my garage, I really should have just bought a dang come-along but no...nearly killed me at the end of the long day.
