What have you found or encountered while fishing or otherwise outdoors?

A forum on a nonfishing website had a cool thread on these lines, so I thought I'd start one here.

What have you found or enountered while fishing or otherwise in the outdoors that was either interesting, cool, neat, strange, scary, exciting, bizarre, odd, and/or nifty?

Here goes for me:

A blue-gray piece of flint that had been worked into a blade. I think an Indian would have most likely used it as a skinning knife. I found it along a two track while on my way to one of our ponds. (it's now a prized possession).

An old buckboard wagon frame.

A crashed small airplane when I was a kid. It had been there many years and was overgrown with vines, brush, etc.

A burial trench while hiking Culp's Hill on the Gettysburg battlefield. Also a minie ball on Barlow Knob ( a lesser-known spot from the first day's action).

My wife and I once came across an oscilloscope while hiking near Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. The thing was pretty big and none too light and I have never been able to put together a plausible explanation as to just how it arrived in the woods.

Not a good thing. Walking through the trees to get to a place on the Toutle River (before the thing blew up) and tripped over a body. Took a bit to get back and get the Washington State Patrol officers. Lots of questions, and 'I don't know' for answers.

Edit: He had all his fishing gear and a heart attack?

Some 5,000 year old petroglyphs. :D
I found them by chance but while the site is not unknown there's very little information about it due to it being on public land and not protected.
I did do some research and found that this was what was called a "dancing place" used for middle and late-archaic rituals. At the time there was a large geyser here and boulders on the site were arranged to predict the summer and winter solstices, the spring and autumn equinox and in a later times dates to plant and harvest

On the right of the boulder you can see what I believe to be a bear's head
You can't make it out from the picture but it has individual quartz teeth

There's also some pre-historic fish weirs and other stonework in the local river that were part of a native fish camp.
They still make for good fish holding structure
There's a story about a battle that took place at this camp between rival Indian tribes that supposedly had to do with a disagreement about how to prepare eel, but that's a story for another time

Re: What have you found or encountered while fishing or otherwise outdoors?

I was on a week long fishing trip with a very light-drinking buddy who was in charge of getting the alcohol. You guessed it, he went light on the beer and we ran out the second day. Later on I'm fishing this creek it's hot and I'm thinking a couple cold PBRs would taste great right then. I proceed to sit on a rock trying not to think about it when I see a couple cans sticking out of the far side bank. I'm thinking somebody left their empties so I trudge over there to grab 'em and carry 'em out. When I pull them out I find they're a couple of unopened cans of cold PBR. I couldn't believe my luck so I said a little "Thank You" prayer and returned to my rock savoring the moment. When I reached the rock I thought maybe I should share these with my friend but then remembered he put me in this situation and should have planned better. I proceeded to drink those beers, in the shade, on my little rock watching my friend fish in the sun. No guilt at all. Those were the two best tasting beers of my life.

Great photos Kelly. Something like this a zillion years back. Sitting on the beach eating Ritz crackers and cheeze. Tap on my shoulder and a 'sniff' in my right ear. :shocking:

We shared and took a nap together. Should have added, Fawn was gone when I woke up.
