Default Is Diver Dan still here?

Hi -- Is Diver Dan around here anymore? I haven't seen him for a while and this "Guest1" name appears instead. Was he really banned?

And no, I honestly don't mean to cause any trouble if he truly was banned and it's a sore subject or something. Please feel free to lock/delete this post and PM me if that would be a better way to inform me without causing any problems.

Thanks!

Yes, Diver Dan was banned, I just got sick and tired of having to babysit his posts all the time. After repeated warnings and a month long ban, he still wouldn't stop posting about politics, fracking, gun rights or his views on just about anything that was of a controversial nature. To top that off he was sending unwanted pm's to other members who disagreed with him. We had several members quit because of Dans insults. Enough was enough! The reason we removed his profile was that he was threatening legal action if we didn't remove all his posts from the forum, so the easiest method was to remove his profile and photo.

Every forum has a Dan or two. It makes for some problems but I feel the best way is to let the forum members do the work.

Eclipsing diverdan has left a huge hole here and makes a lot of us feel that this forum is a bit to prissy and politically correct.

I don't do the drake or any of those polluted sites because of the reel ****. But hate to see a forum have to take this action.

I still like this forum more than any other ff forum. I was sad to see Dan go but I trust Larry and Ard and the crew to have done their homework before such a decision was made.

Kind of a lose lose here for sure. Difficult topics surround all that we do.

Forums are not a place to try and change the world, just make your point, be nice and move on.....let others think for themselves. Sorry Dan had to push the envelope.

WOW, quite a read Larry. DD would have LOVED the UK 'Mother Board' where they have a 'Viewpoint' section. Those Guys will really rip into one another. Here, we don't have one for a very good reason.

I honestly can't remember 'clicking' the little red triangle on this board, but I've clicked it twice in the past week 'over there.' Another major difference is our Mod's post up (frequently) using their 'real names.' Over there ... not a chance in hell that I know of ....

Two things I appreciate about this forum are:
1) Lot's of friendly, supportive advise and information on fly fishing which is very valuable to a novice like myself.
2) Good job of monitoring posts to keep out politics, religion and lots of other controversial topics that besides being annoying, don't change anyone's mind anyway.

I will miss DD's expertise on pike and walleye fly fishing, but "life goes on".

Thanks Larry, Ard and whomever else is responsible for managing this great forum.

I miss DD but not a lot of the comments, it was a good choice for the forum's format.

I regret banning anybody, but one thing I enjoy about this forum is the courtesy of the members. Most of you know more about fly fishing, fly tying, fly rod building and related subjects than I, but that is the reason I enjoy reading the posts. Even a 72 year old judge from Texas can learn something once in a while.

I couldn't agree more, but when someone like DD comes along and just won't leave a subject alone and keeps badgering anyone that disagrees with his point of view, to the point of running off those members, that is when I had enough of his BS. For those of you that didn't know, he was previously banned from the Spey forum for the same behavior. I too miss his expertise, but I don't miss having to babysit his posts to other members on a daily basis, my job is so much easier now that DD is gone!

I agree that to have a member who contributed many threads to the forum does leave a bit of a void but............

Over the years there have been numerous messages sent to me that suggested that the moderation was politically correct. I gave the complaints some thought and my reasoning was, and is, that we attempt to be intelligent, not politically correct. What I mean by 'intelligent' is that we do not want anyone to be alienated or offended by content of threads here. The very nature of an internet discussion forum creates a gray area. We have no idea of a posters gender, whether they are religious or secular, rich or poor, or how they vote. The idea that trying to keep the threads from becoming offensive to people is somehow political is not correct.

My best advice regarding the threads & topics that we have here is that if we see something that we vehemently disagree with, it is sometimes better to simply say nothing than to provide our own counter point. No one wins an on-line argument ever, all that happens is that we reveal things about ourselves that sometimes have nothing to do with fly fishing.
