Default The phone call you don't want to get.

And I'm going to get seriously drunk.

Fellow I've corresponded with for years, and actually never met 'face to face.' Started on a board like this and back and forth, bad jokes, 'I want to kill my kid,' to where-ever. 'What fly would you suggest ...' Your Lab did what???

Just old men talking; 'I think I have just the feathers you need for that pattern' and in the next days Post. Some back and 'What do you think?' He was actually pretty good.

Call a few minutes ago and hesitant 'Is this Mr. Evans? I found your number on my Dad's cell phone, it was one of three so I assumed it was important ...'

Heart attack.

I am going to consume a very large amount of adult beverage.

And cry; another missing good friend. Yes, 'old men' do cry.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, Fred. I'm of the age as you are, that it appears the loss of friends and acquaintances seems to be accelerating.
I use to get up and read the headlines first. Now I start with the obituaries, and then go to the comics.
Be thankful for the relationship, it sounds like he was the kind of guy who would rather be remembered with a smile, than to be mourned. Hang in there, pal !

Fred,

My condolences on the passing of a good friend-- long distance or not. And, I agree with siege's observation about remembering him with a smile after mourning his loss. In doing so, you pay tribute to the man, and you honor his memory...

Fred, deepest condolences! It's never easy losing a friend. Agree with siege, a curse of getting older. Be thankful for the time you had with your buddy, no matter how it was spent, life's far too short as it is. Wish we could say more to ease the sadness you're feeling.

Fred, this is indeed the saddest of news. It's nice they called though to let you know instead of wondering why he stopped communicating. Good friends near or far are precious to be sure, it seems time with them always goes the fastest. Whether on the phone or face to face, even time spent thinking about what they've done or said can slip away quickly without notice. Because they're good people, the ones you're proud to be acquainted with. Keep his memory alive by thinking of him often. My thoughts are with you Fred. Jack

Sorry to hear the news Fred, this is never good. At least you had the opportunity to enjoy one another's company though the years. It's interesting that good communities, like this one and others can foster cherished friendships that cover miles.

Fred, please accept my condolences on the loss of your friend. Getting that phone call must have been a real blow. I'm sure he'd want you to remember him with a drink or three, some laughs, and some tears.

I think this poem from Ogden Nash might be appropriate for this thread:

People expect old men to die,
They do not really mourn old men.
Old men are different. People look
At them with eyes that wonder when,
People watch with unshocked eyes;
But the old men know when an old man dies.

Take care.

Scott

Reading the above and I started to cry again. He had the best collection of 'bad jokes' you could imagine. But kept me laughing. "Where the hell do you come up with this shxt?" Several of the 'clean ones' I've posted here.

Voice on the phone: "What are you up to you stupid old shxt. And do you have a girl friend yet?" Not much to the first, and no to the second.

Edit:

Long and delightful conversation with a board member seconds ago. We had to talk for well over 30 minutes; dug me out of a very deep dark well.

Bless You!

My deepest condolences, Fred. As human beings, we're never ready to get that call concerning anyone, at any age; its just not in us. Best to remember him the best way you know how, sit down, tell some bad jokes, and never forget him.
