docf225 is on a distinguished road
Default Might as well wade in and introduce myself

My parents named me William, my Marines named me Doc and I am a fishing junkie. It stated innocently enough when my Grandfather gave me a "Snoopy" Zebco 303 rig for my 5th birthday. That summer we went fishing every couple of days to one of his favorite spots on the Delaware outside of Roscoe. He had this old split bamboo rod with some sort of fancy reel on it and he would wade into the river up to his knees and throw these little bits of fluff into the water. I on the other hand had a styrofoam coffee cup of worms and was knocking the the pan fish dead with them. On the days he was working, I'd hike out back to a small pond and spend the day drowning worms in search of "the big one". The next summer, he taught me to use his fancy rod and reel by having me try and land the bits of fluff on plates in the yard from various distances. Never did very well at it but we kept trying. I got a better spinning rod set up for my 8th birthday and a horse. I'd saddle up and ride my horse to the far end of the farm to a small stream that actually had fish unlike the stock pond behind the house. Grandpa still took me to his spot on the river and we'd spend the day chasing trout. Couple years later Grandpa passed away and I was given his "fancy rod". I spent several years trying to master the art of fly fishing but never really managed to figure it out. By the time I was in High School I had a half dozen bass rigs, three tackle boxes full of crank baits, poppers, jigs and such. I even bought myself a shiny new "fancy rod" made of graphite. Fast forward 20 years I had a dozen bass fishing rigs, a 24 foot Ranger, I was fishing tournaments and chasing salt water fish as well. I started making my own rods, repairing tackle for friends even pouring my own soft baits. Started tying flies about 10 years ago. Even picked up a few "fancy rods" of my own including a salt water set up. Someday I'll figure out how to use them. Still have Grandpa's "fancy rod" wrapped in a cloth bag stored in a hard tube in the back of the closet.

Today I spend a couple dozen days on the water on weekends and take a couple longer trips. My buddies and I head to Florida each spring for tarpon. I've been trying for the last half dozen years to hook up on a tarpon on a fly but no luck so far. We also head to Maine over the summer for a week.

When I'm not fishing, reading fishing magazines, tying flies, fixing tackle or talking about fishing, I get paid to run into burning buildings. More precisely, I'm the Officer in Charge of the Fire Investigation Unit for a small Fire Department in NY. I'm married 22 years to the most understanding woman in the world. We are child free but raise and train Australian Shepherds and Labs.

Winter is setting in here so I'll start breaking out the tying bench and get ready for the warm water.

Thanks for reading, we now return you to your regularly scheduled lives.

Tight Lines,

Doc

Great intro, Doc! I'm also a "newbie", but a fellow NY FF, from the Albany area.

Don't ever diminish what Grampa taught you with that $10 Zebco, because there are as many memories created with terminal tackle like that as there are with the most expensive rigs that money can buy. I've stilll got (and often use) the Garcia 300 reel and 2508B rod that my Grandfather helped me select and purchase with the money that I earned from my paper route, back in the '60's (I'm now 55 y/o).

Be safe, EGH, enjoy, and maybe we can someday share some water!

Doc: Welcome to the forum and the great sport of fly fishing! Another member "Davo" chases Tarpon in Florida twice a year and he has relayed how hard they are to land on a fly rod so I understand your fasination with chasing them and the low success rate. I've never had the opportunity, when I was in the Air Force stationed in Florida I wasn't into fly fishing. Now I realize all the great fishing I was missing. Looking forward to hearing about your fishing adventures.
