Hi all,

I just found your site looking for some info about a South Bend #55 9 ft 4 pc fly rod. I just picked it up the other day but since it is old I'm not sure what the weight is. Does anyone out know. I just got back into fly fishing haven't done it for a number of years when I was a kid up in West Virginia. I used to catch trout and panfish up there but now I am in Alabama I am interested in getting into some large mouth bass and strippers. I have caught plenty of them on spinning reels abd bait casters but would like to get back to flyfishing.

If any of you can give a hand about the fly rod or about catching bass on a fly rod I would love to hear from you.

Welcome to the forum. There are alot of different types of fisherman here. I'm sure that any question that you ask will have an answer from somewhere. I mainly fish for trout on the streams, so i wouldn't be much help on the bass part but if you have any questions about fishing in general or fly tying. I can help you with that.

Hi Flywld,

We have several members who fish bamboo that may be able to help you. If it is a South Bend Model 55 9' bamboo rod it is a dry fly or bass rod. I am guessing if it is a dry fly rod, it is a 6wt. If it is a bass rod it could be a 6wt but may be a 7wt or 8wt. There should be some indication on the rod just in front of the grip what line it is built for. The line code will be listed in letters like HDE or HDH instead of the actuarial line weight.

Frank

Thanks Frank,

I have looked all over the rod for any identification. It appears that it may have been refinished so number may have been sanded off.

Thanks John

I appreciate your response. I to would like to be fishing for trout but there aren't many trout streams in Alabama. So I will work with what I have until I go where the trout are. I appreciate your offer on the fly tying I may take you up on that a little later.
