- I grew up in NW Montana spin fishing and started fly fishing when I was about 12. I would sneak out my dads fly rod (which was off limits) to fish a nearby creek when he was at work. I don't think he ever knew I was using it until years later when I told him. He passed away a couple years ago and that rod/reel is now on my wall. That got me started but in high school I began to get distracted from fishing and did not return until my early twenties.
When I got back into fly fishing I also began tying flies. I taught myself to fly fish and tie flies (I'm sure it shows in both cases!). I lived in Colorado at the time and also chased warmwater species (pike, crappie, bass, bluegill) with a fly which I enjoyed in addition to trout. When my son began fishing when he was around 3 I again put down my fly rods. I had a couple close call with him wandering behind me and worried about hooking him so I started spin fishing with ultra-light gear for a new challenge. I enjoyed that but missed fly fishing the whole time.
After returning to Montana my son was old enough that I knew he wouldn't wander behind me so I picked up the fly rods and began tying again. My son is also starting to fly fish. There is some excellent fishing in this area but I would like to go out of state for steelhead and redfish in the future. - Location
