- I have a great love for Smallmouth fishing. I grew up along the James River were there was nothing better that wading in the rapids. My last ten years were spent living on the New River in Southwestern Virginia. This is where I truly caught Smallmouth fever and learned to read the river.
Spinning reels and plastic have been my go to for Smallmouth. It’s too easy to wade out in the water with my 6' St. Croix ultralite, Shimano Stradic 2000 3rd gen, 6lb mono, 1/8 bullet weight, 1/0 hook, a handful of plastic, and catch Smallmouth until your thumbs are shredded from unhooking fish.
The number of fish caught seems to not matter anymore. Honestly I can be in the water all day, not catch a fish, and feel on top of the world. I was ready for something new and bought my first serious fly gear. Now I feel rejuvenated; very excited to begin learning another side of Smallmouth fishing. A noob all over again.
