- I picked up fly fishing/fly tying when I was 12 years old. I was digging through my parents garage and came across a pile of my grandfather's old fly tying books, fly tying tools, and fly tying materials.
I tied my first fly later that day, after hauling all that stuff up to my room. I remember what it was, a Mickey Finn. It wasn't very pretty but I was proud.
I did extra chores around the house for a month so I could buy a fly rod/reel/line. I practiced casting every day, and was soon on the water. After much frustration, and studying of all those books my grandfather left behind I took my first trout.
This continued into my early 20's when work and school left me with no time to tie or fish. I haven't been on the water for 6 years, but a recent charter trip for silver salmon re-ignited the passion. - Location
