- About South Holston
- I am one of those self taught flyfisherman and fly tyers. I was raised with a long slender cane pole and a popping bug. My Dad and I would slip around farm ponds fishing for big bream and bass in a little wooden boat that would fit in the back of an Opel Station Wagon. So what is Tenkara fishing today, I was doing 50+ years ago. What a great way to be raised. That is the way my son got started also. He now guides 200 days a year for trout on the tailraces of Tennessee.
So when I moved to the mountains of NC and started chasing trout and smallmouth bass, the switch to a fly rod was easy. Same thing as a cane pole.
My flies were ugly back then. Had to use whatever materials I could find. But they sure did catch trout. So I thought they were pretty.
The South Holston River Tailwater has refined my tying, to say the least. Catch more fish, I don't know. We use to hammer them back them with those ugly flies.
