Default Fly fishing near Fairfax, VA?

Hello all,

Well I'm planing a trip to visit some family in Fairfax, VA next week and was wondering if there are any good trout rivers near that area? Any flies recommendations? I have a 5/6 wt outfit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Stop and fish the Shenandoah National Park on your way through. That's what I do every time I visit family in Centreville, VA. Take 29 the entire way through VA and you'll be able to access all the east slope streams, including the famed Rapidan.

If you open the old Classic Google Maps (not the new Google Maps...has to be Classic Google Maps) and then copy/paste the following link into the search box at the top it will show a map of every trout stream in Virginia.

The park is good, and beautiful, but small stuff. Some great trout streams though. I don't know how far you want to drive, but about 40 minutes north of DC is Upper Patuxent state park. There's a catch and release section with wild trout.

How's the Rapidan fishing? Seems there is a wildlife management area there as well. Three different access points for sections of the River, any recommendations on the upper, middle or lower section?

Got to do some research on Patuxent, is it good fishing? I just want to practice my casting and hopefully catch something but mostly enjoy the environment

Thanks
