It will be a fun time in the Catskills this coming week as fly rodders will come and trade stories, tackle and celebrate some of the most important names in fly fishing.
During the dog days of summer, anglers will meet next weekend at the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum in Livingston Manor, N.Y., for the 29th annual Summerfest-Anglers Market-Jubilee Weekend.
This annual event has grown to be the largest outdoor show and flea market for outdoors and fly fishing collectibles, classic tackle and accessories. The Hardy Bros. Cup, a bamboo rod casting competition on Saturday, is open to anyone with a bamboo fly rod 9 feet in length and under. Casters are required to bring their own reel with a WF or DT floating fly line. Contestants will have several practice casts before laying down two distance casts and an accuracy cast to be tallied for points.
This competition will bring out some interesting bamboo rods and some interesting casters. Hardy/Greys will provide prizes for the top three finishers and guarantee fun for all at a BBQ provided that evening.
In addition, a special birthday celebration will recognize some important names in fly fishing. Next Sunday at 1:30 p.m., the Center and Museum will recognize the birthdays of Joan Wulff, the First Lady of Fly Fishing, who will be 85 this year; Agnes Van Put's 95th; Doc Fried's 85th; Mary Fried's 80th and Mary Dette, First Lady of Fly Tying, who will be 80.
