This is really unbelievable. It is amazing that this kind of large scale dredging of the waters is still allowed to happen. Helicopters and spotter planes? Really? If you've read Mark Kurlansky's book Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World, he sketches a picture of what our waters used to be like. I'm sure there can be a happy medium, but this just makes me sad.

Mark, I don't know where you live on Long Island, but here's a local issue that might interest you. Plum Island is for sale and there's interest in making it a national park. I don't have a link, except for the government for-sale notice

I hate to sound like a He-Man woman hater but they take my hackle feathers for hair extensions and their never ending drive for make-up and beauty supplies is destroying what could probably be the single most important baitfish in the NorthEast. I propose a deal, we need to convince women that it's ok to be a little ugly as long as they let us fish in peace. LOL, just kidding, I like 'em pretty.
As far as Plum island is concerned, it's history certainly is sketchy at best but a national park wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe Dr. Evil will make it his new secret lair, BUAHAHAHAHA
