Browne Wins Gold Medal for Atlantic Salmon Magic

News has reached us from Wild River Press publisher and former Fish&Fly editor Tom Pero of some more good news concerning the celebrated book - Atlantic Salmon Magic.

I am delighted to share with you the exciting news--received at Wild River Press just last Friday--that Atlantic Salmon Magic by Topher Browne has been named the best non-fiction book about Eastern Canada published during 2011. The announcement was made by Michigan-based Independent Publisher Book Awards, which prides itself on hosting the "world's largest book awards contest" each year.

Congratulations to Topher and our splendid creative team: graphic designer John Cole; contributing writers Orri Vigfússon and Simon Gawesworth; illustrating artist Thomas Weiergang; and photographers René Braun, Ted Fauceglia, Matt Harris, Justin McCarthy, Tom Mongomery, Henrik Mortensen, Paul Nicklen, Paul Schmookler, and yours truly.

What next?

Browne is already in the thick of an ambitious follow-up project called Spey: The Lore and Legend of Fly Fishing's Most Elegant Cast. Wild River expects to begin taking advance orders in late 2013 for publication in early 2014.

This is the first Gold Medal "IPPY" recognizing a Wild River Press production. Previously, Rich Murphy's Fly Fishing for Striped Bass (2007) won the Silver and Andy Mill's A Passion for Tarpon (2010) won the Bronze, both in the category of sports/recreation. The regional IPPYs are aimed at spotlighting the best regional titles from around North America and Australia/New Zealand. New books are judged alongside other books for and about their regions only, based on quality and regional significance.

The Gold Medal for Atlantic Salmon Magic will be presented at the 16th annual Independent Book Publisher Awards ceremony on Monday, June 4, 2012 in New York City. The big bash kicks off the 2012 BookExpo America convention, the largest book trade show in the country.

Browne's Magic came out on top of some pretty stiff provincial competition: a book about women in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II will receive the Silver Medal, and a book about the history of hockey will take home the Bronze.

Hockey?

A book about salmon fishing from a small publisher in the U.S. beat a book about the secular national religion of Canada?

To our loyal Canadian followers of Wild River Press and owners of our fine books, The very best to ya, eh?

Re: Browne Wins Gold Medal for Atlantic Salmon Magic

That is very good news indeed Paul, I suspect that having the Fish & Fly organization behind the publication was a great help.

Congratulations to Mr. Browne,

Ard
