Didn't the warranty wars begin when Orvis offered their 25 year 'no fault' warranty almost 25 years ago?
No doubt the other manufacturers had to follow suit to keep in business.
When the warranty wars first started I thought it was the manufacturers getting the shaft but with the price of rods being what they are now I wonder... Click the image to open in full size.

Good call Jack, those original 25 year warranties end this year
Orvis started this whole no fault "unprecedented guarantee, unmatched by any other manufacturer" mess on January 1, 1988

(The Green Mountain Series outfits and bamboo rods did not carry the 25-Year Guarantee, but did have a lifetime guarantee against defects in material or workmanship).

I need to get in touch with St Croix. Thanks for the info.

This is a subject that really irritates me, as just another example of people looking for any and every excuse to avoid taking responsibility for themselves and their actions, and it is just on fly rod warranties.

I may be wrong on this, but I think most defects in materials and workmanship shop up very soon after the product is used. The more it is used the faster the defect shows up.

The pessimist in me thinks they will probably go with the "Buy the Warranty" program, that way they can drop the price of rods a meager fraction and do a 150% thing on the warranty side and increase profits form both sides AND have 'happy' customers.

+1 You can still get very good 'low end rods' but you'll still be paying several hundred dollars. For a 'high end' brand you can easily drop $700 - $800. Is twice the price "worth the price?"

Dropping lifetime warranties, the third rail of rod manufacturing?

One of the major rod manufacturers tried the Extended Warranty purchase plan, a good many years ago, when the warranty wars were just heating up. They distributed POP displays to their dealers, which contained leaflets that explained the program, coverage, restrictions and pricing. I can't attest to how it was received worldwide ( although if you never heard of this before or have forgotten who it was, that should tell you something. ). Amongst our customers, it served to generate heated debate, mostly against the notion.

The overall effect in our sales showed that brand loyalists stayed with the brand for the most part ( even though most of those buyers didn't participate in the program ), while those who shopped the range of available manufactures rods, steered away from the brand.
I'm not saying that in the current retail climate it wouldn't work, but being the first to offer an extended protection plan in place of their current no fault warranty, is going to take intestinal fortitude.

There's a line in the sand, who will be first?
If I had to place a bet on it, I'd bet on a company that's halfway there already. One that isn't solely dependent on the fly market to carry them through the lean times.
