Default Re: Favorite less expensive rods / reels?

I am strictly a cheap ($200) rod and reel type of guy.

I love the following rods, all in that category:

Redington RS4 8' 3wt and 9' 7wt (sadly discontinued)
Mystic Reaper 9' 4wt
Winston Passport 9' 5wt

Rods that I passed along due to unimpressive or stiff:

Ross FW 9' 4wt and 9' 6wt
TFO TiCrX 9' 5wt

My favorite reels:

Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock I and II
Orvis Battenkill Large Arbor III (sadly discontinued)

I love Sage rods, but Echo & TFO are great value and I have a few of them that I do use with a smile on my face.

I have used all the reels from FlyFishingBenefactors and have reviewed the SNAKE1. These are quality reels at great price points, featuring wide arbor and sealed drags. They are ported well and very light.

At least for Reels (never tried the other stuff) flyfishing benefactories is great. I bought the Metolious in a 3-4 for my 2wt (midwest customs - love it!!!) and it's great. It feels really solid in hand. drag engages nicely, silent retrieve, it's just a great product all around. Fit and finish is great too.

Best part, I ordered it, they let me know due to the shows it may be a little delayed in arriving (they let me know this the day I ordered it)... I figured it would be a few weeks. nope, it showed up 2 days later!

Very impressed.

All of mine are less than $200, a Reddington Crosswater 5wt combo, a Echo solo combo 5wt, and one I put together, a TFO Pro 5wt with an Orvis Clearwater reel. So far, I like the Reddington and the Echo set ups better, the TFO rod just seems a lot harder for me to cast vs the other two. The TFO did seem a bit easier with a 6wt line on it. guess time will tell.

Wellll I snapped my 8' 4wt like a moron while out on the Ausable this weekend. On my first day no less. So what'd I do? Bought a new rod! Not "cheap" for me, but an 11' 4wt Grey's Streamflex and wow, what a rod.

I purchased a Snowbee Onyx from EB as a guest reel and am in the process of returning. Price point was great with 3 extra spools, loved the feel but the drag doesn't work, too bad. I think I will be looking to replace with something mentioned here.
