With all the snow here in the NE I have been thinking about where to go this year. I am looking for a place to take my better half who just recently started to FF. We have done the WBA, and the Conn river. She hasn't seen a lot of dry fly action so that would be a preference. The target time is late August....Where would you go ?

A chick flick. LOL. Seriously though, The Arkansas River. Lots & lots of miles to fish. Get a state park pass becuase you will need it in some areas. You can fish from Leadville all the way down to Salida to Canon City, or the all to popular tail waters in Pueblo. Just my 2cents.

In the northeast? in August ?

West Branch of the Penobscott would be an easy first choice
East Outlet of the Kennebec at Moosehead
(actually there's a few other Kennebec and Moosehead area tailwaters worth your time)
Rapid River in the Rangeley area
The Farmington in CT

If your just looking for a day or weekend trip and staying in the NE I'd suggest heading to Roscoe, NY for a day there then maybe head up a little further to Deposit, NY onto the west branch of the Delaware.
Not sure where you are in Conn. but if you are near rt#84 take it west to exit 4W in NY(rt.#17) and that takes you to Roscoe.
Cant go wrong with a town that was voted "Trout Town USA":D

With all the snow in the NE, you're making a big mistake waiting till August. Take her to Belize or Los Roques or somewhere else in the Caribbean -- tomorrow. Even if she only fishes for a day or two and hangs out on the beach or goes snorkeling the rest of the time, you and she and your relationship will all be ahead of the game.

(Trust me on this. I married a girl from Vermont.)

I'll give some very generic non-location advice. Somewhere close to something else fun to do for her if things go bad. Shopping, dining, whatever else makes her happy. You can never predict the weather or the bite. I can almost always turn it into some fun for her when things go bad. A casino nearby so she can pull a slot handle for a couple hours, blow a couple hundred bucks at a shopping mall, baseball game, whatever. I've been traveling where I like for 30 years with the same woman which is more than many can say. Because I always have a backup plan to salvage bad fishing or weather fortune. It's not just about me.

"Take a couple days off on theses days so we can go fishing at XXX". She starts packing everytime.

Any particular reason you're waiting until August? Depending on the year it can be really hot in Aug for trout fishing still.

The Rangely area/Rapid River, Kennebeck, Penobscot, are all good spots in Maine. I don't know much about the rest of NE. I know Farmington can be good but it gets crowded.

If you can go earlier in the year, take her to the coast somewhere for some striper fishing. If you can get on them it's a bloody riot. One of the best days I had fishing last year was slamming schoolies on the fly. Non stop action, and you really can't mess it up. They're a fun sized, aggressive, easy to fish for target.

Thanks all. We did the west branch last August and it was tough, WBA was great but the river was difficult lots of algae. We ended up at Bethel woods for a show and that eased the difficult fishing clouds. Perhaps a different week would be better, with a bigger bug than the BWO.
Fishing in northern Maine or upstate NY gets to be fun but I think the black flies would be a turn off for a newbee.
YNP is the goal, that would give other options than fishing ...don't know if I could stand sight seeing vs fishing for a day......I could hit Depuys and she could shop in Livingston .......

As a back-up I think moving the trip to Sept and hitting the northern Maine Aroostook headwaters would be a back up weather is great and the colors are great.

The idea of the question was to see what you folks have done in this situation, thanks for your responses.
