Default Tippet Question

I have been using orvis 9ft 4x leaders for my trout fishing. In conjunction with that I have been using 4x or 5x Umpqia Tippett material. My problem is this: typically when using dry's I will fish for a few minutes and then inspect my leader only to find a total mess of twists in the tipper material. I'm not sure if it's my casting or the using of gel floating contaminating the tipper material. When you look at the tippet and stretch it out the coils will still be visible but no longer twisted. Have any of you experienced an issue similar to this? Any info would be great. Thanks

Sounds to me that your tippet might be too light for the fly & it"s twisting up the tippet. Also trailing loops might be the culprit. I don't know how many false casts you do before laying out the line but less might be better. IMHO
Also an out of balance fly ( one wing longer than the other etc.) will cause the fly to twist up the tippet/ leader while casting.

I had that problem with some rio 3x tippet and now that I think of it I was using a #4 hook (should have been 1x tippet)
