Default Yelcho

Well today's the day. We're leaving for the Yelcho Lodge in Chile, Patagonia
tonight for 2 weeks of trout / salmon fishing. I'm bringing 4 & 5 wts & 1 8wt.
The 9' 6 wt I had on order is trapped somewhere in the midwest snowstorm & unless it gets here by noon today it stays home. It's not the dealers fault. he shipped overnight last week , but damm I wanted that rod. Anyway I'll post a lot of pics when I get back.....
Let's see 12+hrs JFK to Santiago, Chile... 2+hrs to Puerto Monti...Charter flight to Chaitan, & a 2hr SUV ride to the lodge. I should be ready to fish by the time I get there....

Neil,

Have a great trip!

If you're going to Chaitan Lodge, then they'll have a selection of rods that you can use/test. But, good that your 9 wt. made it - just in the nic of time!

OK I'm back from the trip & OMG what a trip. We had some good weather most of the time, but when it rained, it rained with a heavy wind. Most of the fishing was from a boat & boy did the guides put us onto fish. The average day was 20 plus fish. Mostly rainbows but there were also some browns & a few brookies. The scenery was unbelievable as we were right in the mountains with a few glaciers around us. We managed to catch some large fish on drys ( Elk Hairs) but mostly on tiny streamers & woolly buggers. When the sun was out the dragon & Damsel flies came out & the trout went nuts . I never would have believed a 10-15 lb trout could come out of the water 3 feet for a dragonfly but they did, sometimes 15 feet from the boat & they'd startle you if you were concentrating on your fly on the other side. We used Dragonflies & Chernobyl Ants when they were out & I guess that also counts as dry fly fishing. I had tied up some Deer hair mice for the trip & after using them to scare the heck out of the help in the lodge we went fishing with them & actually caught trout on them. Trouble with them was that were almost impossible to cast with even a 6 wt. as we had to use fairly long leaders & were down to 3 or 4 X, but when I was able to bounce them against the cliff face there was a fairly large trout waiting to gobble them up. This was supposed to be my bucket list trip but I had such a good time I booked again for next year & this time we're going to include a 4 day float on a river in Argentina & then 12 days at Yelcho Lodge to top it off. I'm posting a lot of pictures of the scenery & only a few of trout as we all have seen plenty of trout porn but nothing like the spectacular Andes.

Looks like a great trip, Neil!

20 good sized trout per day sounds pretty good to me. I'm putting the Yelcho on my BL as so today!

When we fished the Petrohue, it was the same for us with flies; mostly locally tied streamers, 6 wts. and heavier leaders/tippet. We had to hike up into some of the tribs, like the San Antonio, to use the kind of gear (3 wts. and 4 wts., 5x tippet, mayfly dries, etc.) that we would normally use here in the East on the freestone/limestone streams.

The Andes are just something that you have to see to believe. With their steep faces, jagged snow-covered peaks and glaciers, they make even the Alps look like old mountains.

And the food........and the wine............and the friendly people.........

It's also an area of climatic extremes. for example, I was skiing at Portillo one day and a week later we were fly fishing in Northern Patagonia.

I'm thinking seriously about going way down next time; below Balmaceda, into the Torres del Paine national park area. The fly fishing reports that I get from people who have been there are hard to believe...........which, of course, means that you have to go and check it out for yourself.....just to be sure.

Thanks for sharing this great trip.
