What's a pike minnow?

Went fishing in the lower Kern a week ago, and my friend caught 2 fish that were sort of like trout, but not really. Later, someone told those are called pike minnows.
What's that? Surely they weren't northern pike?! And they were too big to be minnows...

Bain of my existence.

They are a river fish that is old as the dirt and water itself...pain and hated in some spots, endangered in others.

No it is not a Northern Pike, at all.

Ptychocheilus grandis

U.C. Davis’ webpage : Fish Species by Location - California Fish Website

See: https://www.google.com/search?output...+grandis&btnK=

That is if the other anglers correctly identified the fish. Misidentification of non-sport fish species is not uncommon.

Why is it a bane for you? My friend said that it fought hard like a trout, except that it didn't go aerial at all.

Hi Yikes,

They’ll smack a good sized baitfish pattern pretty hard, then it’s "One run and done".
A lot of folks look on them as pest’s or being overly detrimental to the recruitment of other species, but they’re natives and in my eyes have more right to be here than any of the introduced species of fish.

I've always called them "squawfish". They fight pretty good but I don't think they're very good eating. Here's an interesting link I just came across to get paid for them!
