Default Grand Tetons/Jackson Hole in Late Sept.-early Oct.

I may have an opportunity to spend a long week up in the Jackson Hole/Grand Tetons area in Wyoming the last week in September carrying over into the first few days of October, and was wondering what the trout fly-fishing would be like then, how cold it would be, what flies might be working, etc. I've been up there once before in late May-early June and was really impressed with the area, particularly since much to my surprise dry flies worked well then on small tributaries flowing into Jenny Lake instead of what I expected to be runoff/streamer conditions. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Fly2Fish

End of Sept early Oct can be an awesome time to fish here in Jackson Hole. As for weather I learned never to predict what it will do here. Most years it's quite nice, cold in the morning but warming up nicely in the afternoon. Cloudy days will stay pretty cool. come prepared for cold and mild weather.
As for the fishing, streamers do pick up in the late fall but the dries can be very active as well. If we end up with indian summer conditions there can even be a few hoppers around. Generally you can expect some BWO's,PMD's and Caddis. I'd also have some classic nymphs in my box like Pheasant tails, hares hears prince nymphs and bead head caddis.
Be sure to give me a shout before you come up. Maybe we can hook up for a day on the water, float or wade.

Hi Davo, it's been a while. Thanks for your info. I'm guessing temperatures may be like late May when I was up there before. Once I get the trip set up (if it happens) I'll send you a PM. Usually I'd bring my 5-wt. SP and 4-wt. 10' Helios, but I'm thinking that my 10' XP or 11' Z-Axis 7-wts. might find some use if it's windy and I end up fishing some lakes.

Fly2Fish

You'll find use for all those rods, 7wts would do well chucking big streamers too. I look forward to hearing from you before you come up.

I don't want to sound like I even know what's going on there. Just jumping on to say there's been a lot of talk about heavy hopper populations in Montana and Wyoming. I don't know if Sept/Oct would be too late. Ants were still a hot fly last Oct in the Sierras. I'm tying the heck out of hoppers right now. Going to be there in July.

Jimmie

Hoppers should good in July. They disappear once the cold sets in at night. By late Sept - early Oct they are questionable, all depends on when it gets cold.
