Very dark colors on that fish, Moose, it makes the white on the fins look even more striking!

Moose

Beautiful fish! Looking at the color of the bottom of the creek, the color of
their back must give the fish great security from predators.

Hi,

We have no brook trout here although I do miss them. Your fish picture brings back memories of many a tannin stream brookie. I'm not a biologist but believe that streams with high levels of tannic acid flowing from coniferous forests most often produce the coloration that the one you're holding show us. The tannin is what stains the rocks on the streams bottom and it seems to have an effect on the pigmentation of all of the animals that live in the streams also. It makes the brook trout especially beautiful and since it raises the Ph of the watershed naturally to a level around 6 and often a little over that threshold, it acts as a sort of natural barrier to brown and rainbow trout who prefer lower Ph levels. Anyway, that's my take on tannin and trout.

Beautiful,

Ard

In this creek yes they are always this color.
I never heard of tannin as far as streams or fish goes but you are right.
This creek has that copper color, especially in the slower sections you can really see it.
