Default Elevenmile Canyon Report

Fished the canyon on Sunday, August 19. Got up there 7:30 am and wet waded the whole day - water is perfect! about 150 cfs.

Fish were rising from the start to tricos. Used a double dry rig with a size 16
pmd trailing a size 20 trico on 5X fluoro. Hooked up probably a dozen times and landed 8 fish in about two hours, all on the trico. Moved to another spot just below the C and R section and switched to a PMX and a size 18 parachute adams. Took another five fish, some on both flies.

Average size of fish 14 inches, equal amount of browns and rainbows.

Rafters and some pretty rude campers forced us off the river by 1:30. Pretty decent half day.

Fish the scum lines, broken water, and riffles. Don't shy away from skinny riffles. Fish are looking to hold in more oxygenated water and take advantage of hatching insects.

I should have posted this last week, but I'll add it here:

I fished the Canyon for the first time last Sunday (8/12/2012). For my first experience, here is what I saw:

-Got to the entrance around 8:00 a.m., and was surprised at the $5.00 fee, but the lady at the Game and Parks hut was nice.
-Lots of people beat me to the river, the first half of the canyon had many campers and tubers, so I knew I wouldn't even try to fish there.
-Kept heading up the canyon, and many stretches were already claimed by anglers.
-Made it to the top, and turned around. I decided to fish the narrowest, and steepest part of the canyon there. Other anglers were probably turned off by the fast water and the effort it took to get in there.
-Tied on my confidence pattern, a beadhead flashback pheasant tail despite the trico hatch going on.
-First fish was a nice brown that proved to me I must have tied a bad knot.
-Next three fish were small 9-12 inch rainbows. There is a really nice hole right next to one of the road tunnels. I could see small fish hitting the trico hatch on the surface, but didn't even bother with them thinking the big boys were holding down deep. At this point I had already ran into another angler, so I turned back.
-Probably only fished for an hour, so not bad by my standards.

In all honesty, if I find myself in the area again, I would fish the canyon again, but the crowds turned me off. Maybe fishing on a weekday is the trick. I'd also like to head up to the dream stream to catch a kokanee.

Thanks for the report. I have to say the Canyon is one of my favorites on the South Platte. In my opinion, if you can claim a stretch of river close to the dam (near where the river goes away from the road), there are some hogs in those deep runs.

Hey, does anyone know if the public can go all the way up to the dam? Like as in past those houses? I would assume not. I've only been there once and it seemed like there must have been a gate that made me turn around.

No, not far anyway. You can wade a little ways farther up than the dirt turnaround, but not all the way up to the spillway, at least not the last time I was in that area.

Yeah I should have made that more clear - where I'm talking about is probably 1/2 mile from the gate.
