Default Streamer Bite on the North Platte!

Saturday afternoon I loaded up the truck and drift boat and did a road trip over to the North Platte to fish the Grey Reef with Scoobysteve on Sunday. Last year we had tried to connect up for some Carp fishing but the timing just didn't work out. Sunday morning we woke up to overcast skies but relatively warm temp (38 degrees) for early November in Wyoming.....it just looked like perfect conditions for some fly fishing. After unloading the boat at the dam and then meeting Steve at the Lusby take out (we were planning on doing our own shuttle) we headed back up to the dam to get the day started. With the shorter days and not knowing what the wind conditions would be we wanted to get on the water early. Floating the North Platte you learn to deal with the wind and this trip started out to be just fantastic, the streamer bite was on and the wind was very light and variable.......it just couldn't get much better. Early afternoon the dreaded Wyoming wind decided to show which made for some difficult casting to say the least and to keep moving down river meant having someone on the oars constantly, but on this trip we got lucky as the wind only lasted about an hour. It felt great to finally get to fish with Steve and it was even better that he knew how to row a drift boat which meant that we both got equal time fishing. It had been awhile since I had fished the North Platte so it was a real treat to be able to tap into some local knowledge that Steve provided, which always makes the fishing a little better (thank you very much). Here are a few of the fish that were landed during the trip.

I almost forgot to mention this little story:
We were following two guide boats down river, of course they were nymph fishing and picking up fish on a regular basis, but everytime we caught a fish on streamers they were looking our way. Finally, they pulled over on the right side of the river to have lunch. They were on a run that Steve likes to fish, so we pulled over on the left side and started throwing streamer. I'm standing directly across from the two boats and on about the third drift I hook into an absolute monster of a Rainbow, but on the third jump out of the water it spits the hook. At the sight of that fish, those two guides jump out of the boat and start throwing streamers........I had a good laugh.......apparently they weren't hungry. LOL! I'm sure that the guides get really tired of trying to teach people how to fish and they all use nymphing as the method of choice as it is so effective, but it sure can get boring watching and indicator all day long.
