Default A Big Day on the Gunny!

Found myself in Gunnison yesterday and was able to take a few hours to hit the Great Gunnison river with Jake. The lad has learned the river well and has once again put me into an incredible spot where I was able to fish dries, buggers and nymphs. I stood in awe as I landed my 10th fish on the dry, on the Gunny (in Gunnison), on the second to last day of November while not wearing or caring gloves.

I was not able to get tied on before Jake is screaming "Fish On"...This of course makes it even more difficult for an old man to tie on 3 size 20 dry flies!!...but with the aid of my new cheaters...very sad day...I was turning tippet with speed and ease.

As I laid out my first cast on a pod of rising fish I knew that this would be catching not fishing...Bam 12" brownie, landed and back in and Bam...You know the rest of the story. As long as they were gorging on the hatch it was fish after fish, after about an hour the hatch stopped and the fish disappeared. A warm late fall/winter day will bring out a hatch of small mayfly's (BWO's) that can be amazing. The fish just go nuts on the surface.

Jake was hooking fish on every other cast and I was almost sick of hearing him say "Fish On". Jake has made the full transition, he is a pro with a long stick now---I find myself always asking if he needs a fly, or can I tie on your tippet or fly...He just laughs and I realize time has passed and this kid has become something that you never understand until it hits you square in the face, a man. To know the satisfaction of fishing and respecting and admiring your son who was once a weight on your back is more incredible than I could have imagined.

Jake continued to catch and release an uncountable amount of fish. It was an epic day on the river and one that charged my soul.

I changed over to nymphs and moved into the run along side Jake. He'd cast and I would follow him in, doubles were common...a couple of times one of us would catch and land one and catch and land another while one of us was fighting a bigger fish. Put the fly in the best spot and expect a bigger fish...clockwork.

This day ended up being more than I expected it to be when I was headed to the river. It was a day that marked the noticeable and obvious transition that takes place in every person. It then places a feeling of satisfaction inside of oneself that is not easily explained. I know...Kinda Heavy.

Dinner.

Great report, wonderful day!

While it's nice and comfortable for us to be able to fish in November without so much as a pair of gloves (it's been warm and raining in my neck of the mountains) it certainly doesn't bode well for the ongoing drought.

Sorry to be downer! I need to get out fishing!!

It has been a long time since I've had a day like that! Seeing your post makes me wonder when I listen to the wind howling and look out the window. I am however holding out hope for springtime.
