Green River First to Clear Up

Took a bit but the Upper Green is finally clearing up. The boss and I took a guides day out last Thursday to float. We had the full spectrum of weather except for snow. Bright and sunny when we put in, then clouded up mid morning, and after lunch came the rain and wind. The fish were not exactly what you would call cooperative. We threw everything we had at them. Streamers, dries, and nymphs. We only rolled 4 fish all day on a stretch that is normally very productive. Only brought 2 of those to the boat. Greg had a 14" Brown and I landed a nice 21" Brown. The amazing part is that both took a tan & brown Chernobal Ant, like I said we through everything at them. LOL. Here is a pic of my brown

Nice Fish. I used to float that stretch of river all the time. It is a hard river to crack when the mud is flowing, but there sure are some nice fish. I miss that upper Green. I am hoping to get up there and do a few floats sometime this summer. Keep the posts coming so I will know when the fishing gets hot.

Hi Davo,

Is this the upper Green that is North of Pinedale? We fished up there one time. We liked the Green below Fontenell Reservoir and have fished there for several years. I haven't been back since my fishing partner got cancer and couldn't make the trip again. Thats been 8 years.

Hi Frank

Yes that is the upper Green River. We floated from the second campsite above Warren Bridge to the fish hatchery. Hope to do the same stretch this coming Friday with mcnerney and fyshstykr from the forum. With lick the fish will have turned back on again.

I have fished below Fontenell once a few years ago. Nice water down there too!! You make it out here again give us a shout I'm sure we can get enough forum members to fill a boat or two.

That goes for me also. You ever make it out this way to SE Wyoming, I'd love to take you out in the Hog Island Drift boat!

Hi Davo and Larry,

Thanks for the invite. It has been three years since I made it out West. I hope that I have another trip before too long. With Oil prices like they are now, I don't see a long trip in my future.:)

I understand the travel limits of current fuel prices. If things change or you win the lottery you have a standing offer for some good floats.

The best fishing on the upper stretches is before the summer heat warms the water too much. Basically from mid June to end of July. All time favorite fishing is during the Grey Drake hatch. That should come anytime now till the beginning of August. Saw a few of them last week but nothing compared to when the real hatch its. They are very prolific and the big fish really key in on them. We'll let you know if their going this weekend. Where do you come up from when you go to the Green?

Nice fish Dave, hope we catch a few more like it this week. :icon_smil Lookin forward to finally meeting a few folks from the forum. Not really looking forward to the drive up and back home in the same day though(lots of 2 lane road involved & about 240 miles), bring on the "Rockstar Coffee".

How long is the float in that section?

Depending on our back rowing and which campsite we put in at it can be anywhere from about 6 to 7 hours, or faster if we want.
