Here's a couple:

1) on the highway between Pagosa Springs and Wolf Creek Pass are several spots that have camping. Beautiful area, rugged mountains, good hiking trails into the Weminuche wilderness.

2) All along US Hwy 550 between Durango and Ouray are camping spots. Stunning San Juan mountains.

3) northern Colorado the Rocky Mountain National Park is great, but more crowded than the other spots.

I drove the road down from Independence Pass one Labor Day weekend and I vaguely remember a National Forest or State Forest campground off the north side of the highway about mid-way to Aspen. A web search turned up "Difficult Campground" ~5 miles SE of Aspen. Dunno if it is one and the same with the campground I vaguely remember.
