Default Guatemala Fly Fishing

Casa Vieja Lodge Feb 2010 report:

After the very successfull Stu Apte Fly & No Sancocho Tournaments, the fishing in Guatemala got even better.

* Fly anglers Stuart Hooley & Richard Varley from across the Big Pond, accomplished what no other had done before. Richard is a quadraplegic and a fly angler. Capt. Hamlin on the "Finest Kind" (03 thru 06) took good care of both anglers, but went to the extent of bringing a 3rd mate on board, just to hold Richard's position on the boat, while he cast and fought his fish. That's a first for us and for Richard. The only other angler to fish from a wheelchair is Tred Barta, this past Christmas. They ended their four day stay with 9 releases all on fly. Stuart says he coming back next year with five more anglers!

* Then came Dr. Hanson's annual pilgrimage to our lodge. His party caught 29 sails in one day on conventional, before switching over to fly (11 thru 13). Capt. Nico reports they caught another 15 on flies. They had a great time, as always and are planning next year's trip. Dr. Jim is my second oldest client and most prolific taking four trips yearly. I want to be that strong at 77!!

* Dave & Arlene Ribler stayed at our lodge while fishing aboard the old Circle Hook with Capt. Eddie (11 thru 15). Dave is one of my oldest customers, who started fishing with Safari Outfitters and PanAngling - both of whom I was associated with for many years. Dave is slowing down a bit - only 61 sails and a marlin this trip.

As the month progresses - the fishing is spectacular reminiscent of 2006-07. Every boat this past week has scored 40 raised sails, tagging and releasing about half.

March reports:

* The first section of Murphy’s group (9 thru 11th) didn’t fare well. Finally on their last day on Intensity connected 19-14-8 on fly.

* The second section (12 thru 14th) fared better. On Release 26-23-14; Finest Kind 15-7-4 and raised 4 blues, releasing 2; and on Intensity 34-27-18

It should be noted that the So. Fla anglers faced large swells – much higher than we normally see, but due to cold fronts pushing down from the USA.

* The Waleryzak party (15th thru17th) fishing Release 32-21-8 and 1 250 blue released on fly. Fishing on Intensity 46-18-9

* The DeCorral party from Argentina (15th thru 17th) had to switch boats – Capt. Nicho from Spindrift to Canaso took them to the moon and back 53-22-10 on fly.

* Fervert party (15th thru 18th) on Rum Line with Capt. Chris Sheeder – 12-9-5

* Trefelner group (18th thru 20th) on Finest Kind 19-16-11 and 1 blue

* Dr. Lee Sprinkle and partner on the Twenty with Capt. Jason Brice (15th thru 19th) 23-12-8 on fly and 1 300 black. Good job!

* Don Scovira and his wife from Colorado escaping the winter cold fished aboard the Intensity (22nd thru 24th) with Capt. Mike Sheeder 27-22-15 on fly and raised 2 blues, releasing 1 250# blue

* Squeezed in the lodge were Davis Mitchell & Robert Gates who went down to go over plans to build a hospital in Pto. San Jose and replace the aging clinic there. They got out one day (26th) on the Finest Kind with Capt. Ron Hamlin 11-10-7
