How do the Battenkill VI and Orvis Frequent Flyer hold up?

I have had it with L.L. Bean. Brand new Orion IV SW reel, used only five days and the drag seized up and the screws began to rust. This was a replacement for an earlier reel that literally rotted. Returning the whole outfit for refund.

Want something better for salt water, without breaking the bank.

I primarily will be using it on my annual two weeks in the Caribbean.

Looking at these:

Also, if I may, your evaluation of the Hydros-908-4 and the Clearwater II 908-4. Does more than twice the price mean twice as good?

I recently purchased the LA Big Game, and it is a brute. I have it spooled with 9wt and lots of backing. It makes for smooth drag and quick pick up. I have not used against fish yet, but I hope to change that within the next few weeks. I bought it for Redfish, baby tarpon and bonefish. I have BK Mid-arbor reel that has seen plenty of saltwater, and it still looks new after two years.

I would not go below the TLS or Hydros rods for saltwater. My 9wt is a Zero Gravity (model before the Helios), and it has plenty of backbone with very little weight. The TLS rods are in the mid-300s, and they are made in America with a 25 year warranty.

I have been fishing with Orvis equipment for over ten years. I actually worked in the fishing department in the call center while I was in high school. They make top notch products that they stand behind. Every rod and reel I own is Orvis. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of their products.
