I think I am going to bring my rod afterall, I just don't want to get down there and regret not bringing it. I may never bust it out of the case but it will give me some piece of mind. Saving some money buying from Hills and that will offset the line cost.

The rod I am bringing is custom rod made on a rainshadow blank and is listed as extra fast action. Should work great from my limited research.

I went on a family vacation once, left my rod at home thinking that I wouldn't have a chance to use it.
That was a lesson learned. Like Karl Malden said "Don't leave home without it"

Hopefully you'll have a chance to practice with the 'extra fast' action rod. Unless you're use to casting something like that, you might have some trouble.
You will need to be able to double haul, and hopefully without thinking about it.
And as Cliff has already said, you also need to be able to get off a forward cast with a maximum of 2 false casts.
Don't waste precious 'guide time' having him teach you.

Practice time will be tough but I will do my best to get some time in! I can single haul now, I will practice on the 6 weight I got over here until I get home. I'm in Iraq as a DoD civilian and will have about a week before I leave for vacation after getting home! I assume double hauling is to help load the rod and I will be overlining as well to help.

Nevermind, I am doing a double haul! I use it when I have a lot of line out to make long casts! There is a pretty experienced flyfisherman over here and I will have him take a look at my technique as well. I know this won't make up for time with the rod I will be using but maybe a headstart in the right direction.
