Default Which rod -Hardy Proaxis or Sage xi3???

I need to choose a 9wt rod for a SW trip to Grand Bahamas in June. We will mainly be bonefishing. I need to choose between these (and only these) two rods:

Sage Xi3 9ft 0in #9 4pce
Hardy Proaxis 9ft 0in #9 4pce

What are you're thought on these two rods.

Thanks!

Xi3 is excelent and, though I have only cast it in trout size, the Hardy SINTRIX line is very impressive too. You sure you don't want to consider Loomis NRX? I fished the #8 in the Bahamas this spring and it is something very special; a pure-bred bonefish rod.

George Anderson at Yellowstone Anglers is well known for his thorough if controversial "Shootouts". His new 8-weight comparison is iminent and will include all the rods and more that you are thinking about and should provide insight into the #9 siblings of the rods he is testing.

Of course, the bottom line is your casting them side by side with the line you intend to fish with.

Go cast them, and find out which one is best for you.

That's the problem... I live in central London right now and have no opportunity to cast them on water (or even a park).

What I was after were the experience of others who have spent a considerable amount of time with either rod and could talk about their respective attributes.

Fair enough. Both rods are quality rods. But they have their own personalities.

I found the Xi3 to be powerful and damp. With a 9 weight Bonefish taper line, the rod loads quickly and shoots effortlessly. There is very little tip bounce when the line glides through the guides.

The ProAxis feels powerful, lighter, and lively. Using the same line, the rod loads quickly and shoots with more line speed than the Xi3. I found there to be a tad more tip bounce than the Xi3. It could be that there is more power coming from the butt section of the rod.

I fished the 8 weight Xi3 on Striped Bass. It has a stiff enough butt section to fight wind and to put the hurt on strong fish.

I have yet to fish the ProAxis, but my boss could not break a 10 weight ProAxis on a 35 pound Yellowfin Tuna.

You should ask yourself these questions. Would a powerful and damp rod work best for me? Or would a powerful, lighter, and lively rod work best for me?

Dennis

Thanks for the review, Dennis. Now, I know I'm going to have to cast both of them before buying one.

Alex, since Hardy is a British company, surely there must be a shop around there somewhere to demo at least that one. And if you like it, just buy it. I've heard a lot of raves about them, and from Sage owners too.

Cheers,
Jim

Tell me again why the Loomis NRX is not on your list? And, Dennis, have you fished this rod in comparison the other two?
