sea monster

My fishing partner sent me a picture of a fish he caught last week in Florida. A southern stargazer. Not something that I'd ever heard of. Apparently they're "electric" I wonder if he knew that.
Are they a common fly rod catch ?

Rip we have the similar Northern Star Gazer up here too-- they can also give you a shock. I've never heard of one caught on a fly up here- but they're caught by guys fishing bait in the surf from time to time.

Maybe if we could get a mess of them to fit in a trunk they could power an electric car?

The clam dunkers catch them in the surf out here from time to time. That must have been a really slow strip...

Everytime I see something like this I am forced to wonder what the record for them is. Because it's such an odd species a lot of times it is surprisingly small. In this case it's open. If it weighed more than a pound he let a new all tackle world record go.
