Default fishing the atlantic coast

--Posted this in the Southeast section but not sure of the visibility there.

I'm heading to Amelia Island for the 4th (I've been going there my entire life) and we normally shore fish for whiting and other fish. But this time I want to take my new fly setup. While its not a heavy setup Im not going after big fish and I shouldnt need to throw the lures very far.

I plan on fishing mostly the inlets around the island and wading out where the fish are (definitely not from the shore)... My question is what flies would you guys recommend? The local fly shop here in Boulder said clousers and they have some patterns that look exactly like shrimp heads.

Any other recommendations? Also what about leader/tippets?

You can't go wrong with Clousers and deceivers and I like my leader to be somewhat shorter than the rod, that way I don't have to even think about clearing the line/leader knot when landing a fish

Mark wrote this primer with a more northernly perspective, but it's all good.

I agree with Rip on the leader. As far as flies goes, unless there is a worm hatch going on your best bet is any sort of baitfish or shrimp pattern. Match the size of the fly to the rod your fishing.
If your fishing with people that are using bait or lures cast ahead of them when they have a fish on, there are usually followers. I've found that bait/lure fishermen are a great support system for flyrodders .
