Snook leaders
Heading down to Florida in a week and I'm planning on bringing my 7wt along. Can anyone give me some ideas for a snook leader? Whether its building my own out of mono or buying pre made ones. What lb for butt mid and tippet?
Thanks bros

Re: Snook leaders
The one I start out with is 30lb hard mono/25lb fluro/ 20lb fluro. The length all depends on the area you are fishing and how you cast. If I am getting cut off I will go 30m/25m/25fluro.
You can buy the pre-made ones however snook fishing is like tarpon fishing, after each encounter with a fish you will have to replace some part of the leader so it would get too pricey for me.
Each trip for snook I find I modify my leaders for each situation which would also be hard if they were pre-made.

Well either my snook leaders are the best out there?
Or no one else fishes for snook.

Re: Snook leaders
Sometimes I go with a straight 30# leader instead of tapered.

Re: Snook leaders
I have been using a sinking furled leader thats 6ft. And attach 3 ft. of 20lb. hard mono leader. Im very happy with it and throw almost strictly EP flies and glass minnow flies on a 6wt rod with 7wt. line.

Re: Snook leaders
I'm with mylobass on the twisted leaders, 6' with the 3' shock tippet is just fine. They are easy to make and turnover just about anything. If the leader is made from fluoro, it will sink a little bit. As for a shock tippet, I use 30-40# fluoro that is looped to the leader. Good luck.

I've use standard 0x leaders w a 30lb fluoro bite tippet. Works fine.

Straight 30lbs is difficult to break if you get snagged. IMO, you need a weak link in the system.

Re: Snook leaders
+1 on the weak link. Better to lose a fly or fish than the whole fly line

A friend that is an old time surf caster told me that in the old days they would purposely tie overhand knots in their heavy mono leaders as a "weak link".
I thought he was kidding me, but it actually makes sense.
