Houston/Galveston info

Hello,

I'm heading down to texas in a couple of months and I would like to know more about fishing the salt in this area... I'm wanting to do some flats fishing. Does anyone know anything about this? Fish in the area? tactics? lines? flies? everything? I'm a novice to salt fishing...

thanks,
delopez

Congrats on fishing in Texas. Fishing someolace new is always fun.

As for some of your questions it really depends on where in Galveston you plan on being. Its a vast system. Will you have a boat? Will you have a kayak? Wade fishing?

I have some places you can try if you let me know

Equipment you can use anything from a 6wt if the wind is tame or on up to 8 to 12 wts if youre fishinf the jetties

Flies also depends on where you will be

October is about the best month for fly fishing here.....or so im told

I'm going to be wade fishing/ jettie fishing. Basically, I'm going to be walking :p What do you recommend?

Just don't forget to give your rod, reel, and line a good freshwater rinse at the end of each trip to the salt.

Just FYI, this will also be my first time visiting and seeing the ocean. :)

I live in the areas you speak of and there are so many variables esp. with fly fishing. To make the best of it, I would hire a guide that specializes in fly fishing for tailing reds etc. I can give you a couple of names if you want to send me a message.

Also, here is a video of a buddy of mine that caught a couple of reds in Port O'Conner Texas.

I don't have that kind of budget for this trip, unfortunately. But, thank you.

If you are going to be wading....dont forget to shuffle your feet. We have a lot of stingrays.

It's been a good 15 years or so since I fished Galveston but I remember parking at a tackle shop on the right just before you leave the mainland for the island. There is a railroad that I used to walk that would take me right out to the flats. Keep walking about a half mile or so until you start to see reds. Don't know if you can do that anymore but it used to produce real well for me through out the year.
