Are we done in the north east?

Hey guys are we done up here in the North East? I've been stuck between work and home for the past two weeks and haven't gotten out. Was hoping to read a few good reports.

For the most part, the migration is over
There's still fish in rivers where they over-winter though
Here in CT the guys that fish the mouth of the Housatonic are catching schoolies most every tide and they will all winter

Same here, except they swam right past us this year! They never came up onto the beaches. 4-6lb schoolies in the Hudson all winter but the big fish are pretty much gone :icon_sad:

Re: Are we done in the north east?

Water temps are in the mid forties so it's looking like things are winding down. A few shorts have been caught along the beach on gear in the last few days near Jones and Long Beach according to fishing reports on www.noreast.com

But this time of year it's always worth a look if you're close to the beach and have some binocs to glass for diving gannets. (With any luck you won't see anything and won't have to get out of the warm car and can head back home...) There were also reports swirling around about some big fish on herring under clouds of gannets out at Montauk last week, perhaps started by the chamber of commerce. They should be heading west and will be off SI in 11 minutes... whether they'll be close to the beach is another story. Don't know what's happening south of you in NJ, but that might be a possibility too if you're itching to get out.

There's always steelhead...

I've never fished for steelhead, don't know much about them. What are the closest steelhead waters to us?

Steelheading can be addictive and physically exhausting. Tough weather conditions, tough learning curve, but once you hook one...

Because of the drive, it would be a good expedition if you have a fishing buddy or two to split the driving, lodging etc and it would be a good investment to split the cost of a guide for a day for wade fishing if none of you have done it before, to get up to speed on recognizing holding water and techniques and getting some general info about where to try your luck on your own. If you're up front with the guide in advance about wanting to learn, and sensitive to the fact that they may not take too kindly to taking you to a spot and see you standing there in his "secret hole" the next day when he shows up with new clients.

The closest to us would be north of Syracuse around Pulaski there's the salmon river on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario about 5+ hours away.
Fly Fishing the Salmon River in New York

Around Erie PA there are also some streams like Elk Creek:
Fly Fishing Pennsylvania's Elk Creek Trib to Lake Erie

as well as some streams in western NY
Guide to Steelhead Fishing in Western NY

There are alot of steelheaders on this board that could give you a lot more info and better advice about gear and tactics, if you want more info.

Good luck!

Fished today and the water was 46 at Cape Henlopen point no even a scratch. The good news is gas is cheap and I'm heading south.

Steelhead will be a slow game compared to what your use to with the saltwater, nymph, nymph, nymph....

Spring when the steelhead drop down back into the lake they are hungry and will take streamers. Prob. around the same time the stripers return. April into May...
