Default 6th Annual Stu Apte Tournament

Yesterday was the first day of the prestigious Sixth Annual Stu Apte Fly Tournament being held at Casa Vieja Lodge in Pto. San Jose, Guatemala.

Boats leading the tournament are:

* The team of Mark Boname and Boni Galvan aboard the Captain Hook with 8 releases. Capt. Hamlin was able to raise 11, generating 10 bites and releasing 8 sails. Plus they had a 300++ Black come in with 2 min. to go in 124 ft. of water 5 miles out. Capt. Hamlin reports "He bit 5 times, before we hooked him, since a Black and a Spear are still on my list of ones I haven't caught. I was very excited. But we pulled the hook, we teased him up again but he wouldn't bite again."

* The team of Eugene Glad and Russ Stryken aboard the Rum Line with Capt. Chris Sheeder 32 raised right in the same spot - five miles out and 8 released.

Trying to catch up:

* The team of Ron Mazzarella and Lloyd Jacobsen on Makaira with Capt. Jason Brice raised 12 and released 3

* The team of Drs. Neal Rogers and Mike Mondloch on Spindrift with Capt. Nicho Alvarenga raised 19 and released 3

* The team of Stu Apte and Jeff Harkavy aboard Intensity and team of Tim Wade and Kenny Gaskell on Afinity were tied with 4 fish per boat

Default Re: 6th Annual Stu Apte Tournament

Second day results are in:

Leading the pack are the Rum Line anglers who added 5 more fish for a two day total of 13

Following close behind Makaira anglers with 7 released sails for a two day total of 10 fish

Then the Captain Hook who added only 1 fish for two day total of 9

Spindrift anglers added 5 more for 8 total

Next the Intensity finally putting some more fish to boat with 7 releases

And last but certainly handicapped is Afinity with only 1 fish. You guys in Wyoming need to get more practice.

2011 Sixth Annual Stu Apte Fly Fishing Sailfish Tournament

Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala

Capt. Chris Sheeder tournament winning streak continues as he takes the top honors by winning the Stu Apte Fly Fishing Sailfish Tournament, January 27-29, 2010. The fleet faced excellent fishing conditions on all three days of competition with the billfish bite only 4 miles from shore. The top team included Capt. Sheeder, mates Ricardo and Zonder with anglers Gene Glad and Russell Texeira. They released 17 sails for the three days. The team aboard the Intensity took second place honors with Capt. Mike Sheeder, mates Flaco and Waldo and anglers Capt. Stu Apte (IGFA Hall of Famer) and Jeff Harkavy also with 17 sails. Stu and Jeff missed out on winning the tournament by only 13 minutes. Third Place honors went to our very own legendary Capt. Ron Hamlin aboard the Captain Hook with mates Nico and Hector and anglers Mark Boname and Bonifacio Galvan (Galvan Reels). Mark and Bonifacio released 13 sails for the three days and had their hearts in their hands as they had a visit from a large black marlin on the first day of fishing. Even Capt. Ron was excited as the marlin came in hot and heavy and blew up on the bridge teaser and quickly moved to flat teaser, “boy you should have seen this fish go”, he reported on the radio.
