Re: May 2015 Belize trip

Safely home, thank you.

I'm gearing up for a trip to Wyoming now. I leave next weekend. It'll take a week to get the salt from my clothes. :D

Indeed, Cochise, a fine Bone. Most of the...

Re: May 2015 Belize trip

Finished up yesterday by catching a few jacks. Then I gave some flies to a guy visiting from California (with girlfriend). She said, "He never catches anything."
That's why I don't travel with my...

We put aside the flyrods yesterday afternoon, and went out trolling for dinner. Not the best, but fresh jacks...

Re: May 2015 Belize trip

I caught 2 Bonefish on the flats yesterday morning before breakfast. It's still very windy (15k sustained), so the small boats are staying in protected areas behind the islands. Fortunately we're...

Re: May 2015 Belize trip

The small, red shrimp have been scarce around the lights at night for the past few nights, and so has the action. The Tarpon and a few Permit stay around and cruise the perimeter of the lights, but...

Re: May 2015 Belize trip

You're right about weather, but here the moon/tide cycles are critical too. On the new moon (May 18) the water surface was covered by small, red shrimp (under the lights of the pier). Tarpon were...

Re: May 2015 Belize trip

The new moon was yesterday, and last night the Horse-eye Jacks were back. They were smacking around the pier, as were Tarpon. No Permit. We didn't get any Tarpon, in part because the jacks were so...

Re: May 2015 Belize trip

Last night (Friday) we heard lots of fish popping the surface at the edge of illumination by the pier lights. We could see Tarpon occasionally, so we assumed that's what was feeding. After several...

Re: May 2015 Belize trip

Thanks.

The slam will be tough for me, but my buddy may have a chance. He arrived 3 days earlier than me, and already had Snook and Bonefish. We have both Tarpon and Permit around the pier...

Re: May 2015 Belize trip

Thanks.

We're staying at Blue Marlin Lodge. It's been crazy windy until yesterday afternoon. We managed to catch 3 Bones in a short time late yesterday, but didn't see any Permit. The swells...

May 2015 Belize trip

We arrived in Belize on Sunday, and the gods must have seen our flyrods. The wind is howling daily. But the fortunate thing about staying on South Water Caye is fishing right off the property is...

Re: YNP roadwork 2015

Thanks for the info, OP.
I'll be driving through YNP to West Yellowstone on June 9th, so guess I'll have to avoid the West Thumb route that I usually take.
Maybe I'd best drive west of YNP, up...

Re: First Bonefish Trip Fly Rod and Reel Suggestions

Ahh, okay. Well, no harm in planning ahead.
You've come to the right place. Plenty of good advice here.
My best tip for those heading to Belize for the first time: pack some weedless flies (Crazy...

Re: First Bonefish Trip Fly Rod and Reel Suggestions

You said you're going to Belize, but didn't say where (unless I missed it).

I'll be there starting later this week, fishing around South Water Caye (off Dangriga) until late May. If you get down...

Re: Belize: Belize River Lodge vs Coco Plum

Too bad your trip was less than you expected.
That's why I recommend Blue Marlin Lodge. I'll be there in 3 weeks, and I've never had a bad experience. They have no guides of their own for...

Re: Puerto Rico fishing?

Wow, your must be fishing with the guidebook in your left hand. That's a lot of diversity. Cool.

I often catch wrasses on flies in Belize, especially when after Bonefish over rubble. I'm up to...

Re: Help identify this fish (grouper?)

I didn't notice those spots on the bottom lip in your pics at first. But now I can see one of them. That's diagnostic. Looks like a Coney for sure!

Mark it down! :teef:

Re: Help identify this fish (grouper?)

Pattern looks like Coney, but overall more like a Graysby.

Good mystery, and I admit I'm stumped.

Re: Reports of illegal bonefish harvesting

Bonefish are eaten in much of the Caribbean, and are considered a traditional food among Garifuna people of coastal Belize. They are protected in Belize too (as in the Bahamas), but locals take them...

Re: Waterton Canyon trip report

Not much enthusiasm in the wife pic: drooped posture; loose line.

You'd better find a way to entice the fish to bite her line, or you'll be biking more, fishing less.

Re: What to wear under Simms Flats Sneakers?

This is a good point.
Better yet, use large rubber bands. I made some wide rubber bands from a bicycle inner tube. Very handy for this.

Re: Do you know your state fish?

I'm in Oxford, MS.
I agree, I thought the 'speckled trout' was recognized as such. But then, since the true name is "Spotted Seatrout", maybe not!

I lived in Louisiana when a bill came before...
