Re: What have you been tying today?

Experimenting with abdomen materials for purple tunghead poxyback (actually, Silver Creek's UV resin back, but that's a mouthful) nymphs.

Re: Somerset Show 2016 Fly Rod Observations

I asked President and rod designer, Jim Bartschi, “Do I really have to replace my well-loved rod with this brand new one?” He paused for a moment as if thinking to say, well, you might not catch any...

Re: Senior design project, fly reel survey

Orvis sold multipliers for many years. Orvis chairman Leigh Perkins is a big fan of multiplier reels. The disadvantage of multipliers is that they are heavy and mechanically complex.

Re: immigrant reel invasion

A lot of that stuff is no-name junk made by pirates, but the top brands buy their stuff from a few high-quality factories with more rigorous standards of quality control. You can find lots of cheap...

Re: immigrant reel invasion

I have Asian-made reels from all of those but Cheeky, and they are all very high quality. I also know some very accomplished fishermen who like their Cheeky reels and fish them hard. The best...

Re: Do we need expensive rod to fly fish with?

(digression) Hey Silver, where do the Targus Gary Borger rods fit into that waterfall? I remember you saying at one time you liked them so much you bought two of each model. I bought a few myself...

Re: fishing emergers

Years ago, Fran Betters designed a similar nymph, with a puff-ball of clipped deer hair where Schollmeyer has indicator yarn. I suspect Schollmeyer's parasol emerger was an evolution of the Betters...

Re: Dubbing tool

+1 on the dubbit. I've had one for years too.

The other thing I use is a cheap little electrical clip. It's handy when you don't need to make a million spins, or you need a firm grip. It''s...

Re: Lost fly rod

Tell all the managers at local fly shops like Coleman's, Orvis, and any guides you know, and ask them to spread the word. Someone might walk into one of the shops to report it, or they may have...

Re: Decent inexpensive 3-4 wt reel?

Price varies with their "bargain" sales. At the moment it's $25. If you wait you might get one for $20. A great price for a pretty decent reel -- I've got three of them myself as a backup in...

Re: 3-Tand TF-70 Reel Review

I don't know how 3-Tand determines their international pricing, but since the reels are made in China, the dollar exchange rate may not hurt you too badly after all.

I have been very happy with both Redington and LL Bean in the past. If I were buying a new pair today I would probably also take a close look at Orvis. My decision would probably turn more on price...

3-Tand TF-50 in titanium. Or a recently discontinued Hardy Ultralite DD 4000 in "silver".

Come to think of it, I have had a succession of 9' 6 weights over the years without ever finding the ideal one. In my quiver they fill almost precisely the niche that Anderson's 5 weight shootout...

Re: 2016 5 WT Shootout

True enough. Here's the thing, though: If you're fishing up in the Gibbon Meadows all day, a 9' 5 weight might indeed be just the ticket, but probably not the one designed to drill a hopper 60...
