Re: Czech nymphing the Driftless?

I've never heard of French nymphing before. Does it work with a weighted size 12 scud?

Re: Czech nymphing the Driftless?

Since the Driftless is predominantly skinny water, it's often easiest and best fished with a nymph under a big dry (hopper, foam beetle, etc) or indicator. You're usually making somewhat long casts...

Re: Dedication

Reminds me of the classic:

'Every time I go fishing on my favorite stream, I see the same elderly couple fishing together. Well, last time I went, he was fishing alone and having a rough go of...

Re: Bear Creek, "Driftless"? Region, Iowa: Opinions Wanted

I would highly recommend wearing an article of blaze orange while out on the streams that time of year.

Also, it's all shotguns in Iowa and the south half of Minnesota, so no worries about .223s.

Re: Bear Creek, "Driftless"? Region, Iowa: Opinions Wanted

Deer hunting season in Iowa is the first week or two of December, so you'll be fine.

Re: Fly fishing back pack

With that list, I'd be looking for a Sherpa, not a pack. :P

Re: Bear Creek, "Driftless"? Region, Iowa: Opinions Wanted

I wanted to point out that the Minnesota Driftless is open year around in the state parks, which offer excellent wild brown and brook trout. Fishing is excellent year-round. It's only a short drive...

Re: First trout!!

Even if he posts pictures, we'll still require him to catch more trout as soon as possible to verify the first time wasn't just beginner's luck. :)

Re: A really offensive word

Being seen as elite necessitates comparison, which is something I've never done. When I'm casting to a trout, I'm thinking about what that trout is going to do. Not what another angler would do.

Re: Fly rod size advice

Where are you located?

And yes, you must match line weight to rod weight. The rod needs to flex with the weight of the line. Too much or too little and you won't be able to cast effectively.

Re: beginner's luck

There's no such thing as luck. You came well-prepared with a friend to help, and you clearly know the craft, even if you're new to the fly-fishing part of things. That ain't luck. You earned those...

Re: Trip advice please

Fishing in Iowa really falls off in the summer. They do a lot of stocking, and the stockers don't hold over when its hot. I'd highly recommend driving a little farther to Minnesota or Wisconsin. ...

Re: Cheating

I've found confidence helps me catch more fish than anything else. And nothing instills confidence like using the same fly that caught the last fish.

Re: Is trout fishing good in the summer?

Trout fishing can be excellent in the summer, depending on where you're fishing. Tailwaters and spring creeks stay the same temperature all year round, so they're you best bet for finding good...

On a stream like that, every fish is the fish of the day. :) We're definitely hitting that one again.

Glad to, we had a good time. I should have brought the camera. Seth managed a nice 8" brown and a brookie. Not bad for someone who claims to be new. :) The brown was a very nice fish for water...
