Switch Rods

I'm just getting into switch rods,after recieving a Cabelas 11' 8wt as a gift.I can see myself learning with this setup but a friend told me that I need to go ahead and spend some $ on a good setup....

The river below the diversion dam is one of my favorite places to fish,that is like Home Water to me.Should be a good place to break in my new Scott 6wt.
