Re: Tell me a little about trout fishing where u are ?

I live part of the year in Missouri and the rest in Montana on the Yellowstone. In Montana, wind is very often a big factor, but I still get by with a 4 wt. for dries, a 5 wt. for nymphs, and a 6...

Re: Wormy trout! Yuck!

Interesting...bass in many Ozark streams have a lot of yellow grub parasites. I wonder if it's the same thing that was in that trout. I don't know about the trout in the Ozarks...never cleaned one....

Re: Next stage in the cycle

I caught a bunch of fish on dry flies on the Yellowstone River today...65 degrees and mostly sunny most of the day. And I'll go back to Missouri shortly and start catching smallmouth again. Unless...

Re: Streamer Tactics

I love streamer fishing enough that I sometimes try to force fish to hit streamers rather than fishing the stuff they are eating. Today I drove over to the Boulder River (the one near Big Timber MT)...

Re: Just Curious: How Many Fly Rods Do you Own

i can't imagine ever selling a rod, and at the same time I can't imagine having a rod that doesn't get used. However, I have an excuse to own more rods...I live in two different places so I need a...

Re: Bozaman & Ennis

The Rib and Chop in Livingston is excellent but ALWAYS crowded in the evenings. You need reservations. If you happen to go over and fish the Yellowstone on Monday, go to the Murray Hotel Bar...

Re: Furled leaders and tippet rings... What am I missing here?

Adding just one thing to Silver's excellent information...his analysis assumes smooth-surfaced water. Wave action both breaks up the window and extends it in bits and pieces. The movement of the...

Re: Fishing Blown out water

"Blown out" means high, very muddy water to me, and it'll be tough at best. But, this time of year a good rain can bring about a smaller rise with murky, not muddy water, and if that happens it can...

Re: Week long float fly fishing

I second the suggestion on the Water Master. If you are wanting to float with a partner, it looks like the Flycraft would be a good choice, but if you want to float solo and be able to fish while...

Re: Are you a Maximizer or a Satisficer?

One of my favorite sayings is, "The perfect is the enemy of the good enough." I continually have to tell my wife that, because she gets paralyzed trying to make the perfect decision, while I try to...

Re: Move on or change up?

I like to work a spot thoroughly when nymph fishing, trying to get at least one good drift everywhere in the hole or run, but I seldom bother to change nymphs. If I'm streamer fishing I keep moving,...

Re: Overlooked Lakes, Overcrowded Rivers

I am perfectly willing to agree that lakes have their own set of challenges, that they can be less crowded, that the fishing can be as good or better.

But I'd about a hundred times rather fish a...

Re: Warm water fishing in winter

I do a lot of winter fishing for stream smallmouth bass (and other bass species). Location is extremely important. Catchable fish are ONLY in limited spots; 95% of the river is fishless. And water...

Re: MT or OR.......

You can find variety in Montana, but it's easier to find it in Oregon. I don't think the trout fishing in Montana can be beat (and I'd always opt for Montana over Wyoming, as somebody above...

Re: Airlines and fly rods

You're at the mercy of the people at the gate. And since many airlines have started charging for carry-ons over a given size, at the least you might have to pay extra to carry on one or more four...

Re: finally a weekend off for some fishing

I'm fortunate enough to able to avoid fishing on holiday weekends like the plague. I got my fishing fix in with a three day Ozark smallmouth float trip last week, and a two day float yesterday and...

Re: What's your scary fly fishing incident?

One that comes to mind took place a few years back on the West Boulder in Montana. A couple of buddies and I were fishing some private land. I had just wandered upstream and saw one of my friends...

Re: Advice for slow, deep pools.

Maybe it's because of my smallmouth fishing roots, but I have a lot of confidence in the concept of the reaction strike. It's how I fish for smallies in very clear water so it's probably only...

Re: Advice for slow, deep pools.

That's a VERY good point. If the fish aren't in the mood to feed, catching them is going to be difficult at best, and the middle of the pool is not usually where the food is, so the fish there often...

Yep, the old thing about fish turning on just before a big storm is sometimes true, and almost got me one time. I was on the river and started catching smallmouth like crazy, big ones. The storm...

Re: Small stream fishing.

I love small creeks, but I also love big rivers. Different experiences, not one better than the other. In Montana I live on the Yellowstone and love floating it in driftboat, raft, or my one man...

Re: Catch and Release...

Some dos and don'ts...you don't want the fish to be touching things that are dry, abrasive, sticky, or hot, so if you're going to lay it on the bank for the photo, put it at water's edge in an inch...

Drive out West Yellowstone and down the highway toward Ennis. You'll go by Quake Lake, and the sight of the huge...
