Re: First aid kit

One thing I'd suggest is a pre-tied loop of line for fish hook removal. Granted you can probably jury rig something on the spot, but if you have a hook embedded in you, it's easier to have something...

Love the wind!

I love fishing in the wind. 4th of July weekend I had the chance to fish a couple of windy evenings and had a blast. Granted, this may not be for everyone, but for where and how I fish, itís great....

Re: Is there that big of a difference? Old vs. New

So you've answered half your question.

Do you NEED to buy something new? NO

Now you just have to answer the second half of the question, do you WANT to buy something new?

Re: Is there that big of a difference? Old vs. New

So what exactly are the shortcomings of your current equipment that you would like to resolve with the purchase of newer stuff?

Re: First tenkara trip

Fixed length-line systems are a specialized tool. They are extremely good at doing what they were designed to do. However there certainly are situations where it's best to use another tool.

Re: First tenkara trip

At least for me, that's one of the big appeals fishing a fix-length line system - the effortless casting. I find sometimes when I'm really concentrating, the casting becomes automatic. I look at a...

Re: Fly-Fisheman is asked, "Why Fly Fishing."

It's funny, I've been thinking about this same question a bit for the past week or two. What got me thinking about it, was of all things, archery. About the same time I started fly fishing, I used...

You'll remember that fish for as long as you are alive.

Great job!

Re: Is Tenkara a fad?

Are fixed-length line systems or reeled fly fishing outfits a fad? I don't know. I do know that fly fishing is a niche market in the bigger scheme of things, and fixed-length line systems are a...

Re: Is Tenkara a fad?

It's a crappie rod if used in conjunction with a bobber, however if a strike indicator is used, it's still considered a fly rod.

Re: folding net

That's the only downside to these, you need to drink a bottle of wine to make one.

I "processed" about 45 - 50 fish this weekend, never had to touch a single one. At least to me, these things...

Re: Noob needing prices to ask for rods

I agree with Ard. Your Black Beauty rod is neither rare nor a particular example of the rod maker's art. However it is a very serviceable rod. It will be of interest more to someone looking for a...

Re: High end reels.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but a minor nit. Solitudes are not made by the men who created it. Craig Harris, the designer of the Solitude did make the reel for a number of years here is...

Re: 9', #5 Rods - master of nothing....

When I first started fishing, a 5 weight rod was considered as the standard light weight rod. It was almost universally recommended as the rod to use for trout and panfish. Of course, a big reason...

Re: High end rods

As in most things in life, there is a difference between need and want. You really don't need to eat a steak, a hamburger will sustain you.

That being said, buying stuff can be fun. It's true...

Re: Fly Fishing Reel Weight

My personal opinion, for the fishing you described, I think you are over gunned.
Regardless of what reel you are using, a 6 wt outfit is pretty heavy for the type of fishing you describe. I think...

Re: folding net

Dennis,

Yep, the gizmo won't do you any good. The nice thing about the gizmo is you don't have to touch or control the fish to release it. Doesn't allow for pictures.

As an aside, I've always...

Re: Could use advice for slow action rod.

Another $0.02, I'd personally never buy a quality (read expensive) cane rod in a 9' length. There is very little demand for longer length cane rods. Longer cane rods tend to get heavy and not that...

Don't know if this might be useful to you, but I've been using this homemade gizmo for the past two years. It works almost like magic, I haven't had to touch a single fish since I started using it. ...

Re: Reel maintenance.

I'm also a big fan of Hot Sauce. Been using it for years and have been very happy with the results. BTW, this is one case for less is more, a little dab will do ya.
