Re: Heading to Opa-Locka, FL

I'd second Bob Lemay. I've never used him but from his posts on another forum I wouldn't hesitate to book him if I were going to be in the area. I will someday.

I don't know anything about...

Re: Press-On lettering

You can experiment with water slide decals. You can get some pretty fine lettering from that. I've also had some great labels made by Decal Connection.

Spin rod build for a friend - 4wt equivalent?

You'd probably be looking at an Ultralight rod. Batson has some great blanks in their fiberglass SPG series. The SPG721 is a 6' 4-8lb test light power blank. It will handle 1/16th - 3/8th oz...

Re: Silver Creeks UV Products

I've been using Silver Creek's resin and lights for a few months. I was using CCG previously. I'm definitely sold. I use it for thread coating on clousers and clear coating on poppers. I even used...

Are you sure she's not tying flies?

Wait until you see the look she gives you when you want to tag along to Michael's/Joann's/Hobby Lobby next time!

Re: Silvercreek's Crystal UV Fly Tying Resin

This stuff is awesome. You might see "Fast Cure" and "Tack Free" on other bottles but Silver Creek's product label is the truth.

Re: Orlando Area

Yes! I am stupid and I fish in flip flops. Those things hurt.

As mentioned if you are staying at Disney World, the Wilderness Lodge has some decent waterfront. It's usually pretty busy...

Re: Orlando Area

For feshwater, pretty much any retention pond or canal will hold fish. You'll have little problem finding bluegill, bass and tilapia. Watch where you put your feet and keep an eye out for wildlife....

Re: The "Non-Cigar Box" Hooks & Stuff Collections... REDUCED

I received my box this week. If you are on the fence about getting in on one of the last collections from Jerry, get down from there and do it. You won't regret it. Thanks for the collection and...

Batson Forecast F865-4DB blank and Rec recoil guides?

I've been building rods for about 10 years. I've only been building fly rods for the last 2 or so. While the basic steps are pretty much identical for any rod build, I still searched around and...

Re: Matrix 7' 3wt Blank

For AmTac Matrix fly blanks, check out The Anglers Habitat on the big auction site. It's the best price I've seen around. Better than the 50% off Cyber Monday sale at Mudhole.

I've also built...

Thanks to the Internet Wayback Machine, you can still get the tutorials:

Re: Jumping in

I've had decent luck with opaque fine tipped paint markers. The paint is generally free flowing enough to work on a gloss blank.

Waterside decals are good but generally inkjet printing is not...

Re: American Tackle Matrix blanks - Ugly or Not?

I haven't seen them in person but I have a good idea how they look. I think you can make a nice looking rod but it's going to have a really modern look. Match it with a reel, seat with a green woven...

Re: Websites for buying building materials

If you are looking for Batson blanks or components, check out Utmost Enterprises. Excellent prices (and discounts), clearance and minimal waiting on out of stock items. I don't have any association...

Re: looking for extra-fast action blanks; specifically 10ft 5wt

Merrick Tackle carries the CTS blanks. If you don't have an account, I can help if you lean that way.

Re: looking for extra-fast action blanks; specifically 10ft 5wt

The CTS Affinity X series is described as Fast - Extra Fast. There is a 10' 5wt 4pc model. It's a larger investment than the Pac Bay or MHX blanks though. Their Revo Salt series is called Super...

What do you need to start?

I am not a good enough fly caster to answer that for a fly rod. For a spinning or casting rods, you can absolutely get better performance with a custom rod than an off the shelf rod. You can also...

What do you need to start?

Changing the number, type and location of guides on a custom built rod would make the rod behave differently than a shelf rod built on the same blank. Differing grip and seat styles would also...

My intent was not to put anyone in jeopardy. My main intent was to state that you don't really save a heck of a lot of money building your own at retail prices. Once you get into wholesale pricing...

Practicality questions....

I found I didn't save money building with retail priced components. Once I got my business license and could work wholesale, then things became more reasonable. Of course, you make a lot less rods...

Actually yes. It does darken the thread but you aren't going to get transparent wraps. Hadn't thought about that.
