Re: Sanded vs. Unsanded Rods....Aesthetics.

I know absolutely nothing about aesthetics, just ask my wife about my choice in clothing.

Over the last 25 years or so I've fished three generations of Orvis 1 wts, and I can say by a wide margin...

Re: Fiberglass Fiasco

Bob,

You'll be surprised, your slowed downed casting rhythm will come back to you faster than you think. The only problem, you may end up preferring it.

have fun,

Re: Classic dry fly rods

I don't know if there is an easy specific answer to your question. Generically speaking, the way to think about is that bamboo/glass physical properties lend themselves to slower rods. Graphite...

Re: Classic dry fly rods

If you are coming up with a list of classic holy grail rods, you need to add the Phillipson EF76 Registered.

Re: Classic dry fly rods

I'm not exactly sure what classic might mean, if it implies vintage, all I need to do is think about what I fished with when I first got started (i.e. pre Graphite).

As several have mentioned,...

Re: 2015 5-weight Fly Reel Shootout & Review

To be honest, I only skimmed over the report, the print size of the charts is too small for my old eyes anyway. I will say I appreciate the ambition and zeal shown by those folks in terms of...

Re: Cleaning and drying backing

I don't have an opinion one way or the other regarding the effects of salt water since the only oceans I fish in are fresh water (i.e. the Great Lakes).

However I will say if you ever have the...

Re: Best line for 7.5ft eagle claw

Some of those older fly/spin combos aren't that great to fish under the best of conditions. It may very well be your rod, not your line. If you are going to be fishing more than a time or two,...

Re: Thoughts on possible trip to Detroit

As I said in my post, not everyone's cup of tea. However it is one of those places which no one goes there anymore because it's so crowded.

Re: Took the 1wt Superfine this morning

The Orvis 1 wt is an extremely effective tool for catching trout. The more you fish it, the more you'll like it. I've been fish one for the past 20 years, have caught at least a couple thousand...

Very good advice. That being the case, what situation/environment will a 4 or 5 weight rod fish that can't be handled with your 3 or 6 wt? Of course, there is nothing wrong with getting a new rod...

Re: Great Lakes Smelt

Smelt dipping used to be a big deal around Michigan. Folks would take hand nets, at night, and scoop them up by the bucketfull. I never cared to eat them, but the Grandmother loved them. It was...

Re: Thoughts on possible trip to Detroit

Most folks use a heavier rod for steelhead, I personally always use a 5 wt. Folks may say it's not ideal, but it will do. I've yet to loose a fish because I wasn't fishing a 7 wt. I wouldn't buy a...

Re: Thoughts on possible trip to Detroit

There is plenty of water in Michigan in which to wet a line.

Depending on the weather, end of the month could be marginal for steelhead. There are numbers of steelhead right now in the rivers...

Re: New to fly fishing (and the USA!). Help me get set up?

Fred,

That's not a typo. It is your main line that transfers the energy from your rod tip to your leader/tippet/fly (as in any type of fly fishing). You need to have some degree of...

Re: New to fly fishing (and the USA!). Help me get set up?

I'd suggest you start out with a 12' rod, it is a good all around length. I'd also suggest you start out using a length of 14 - 16 # flourocarbon for line. Other than that, all you need is a spool...

Re: New to fly fishing (and the USA!). Help me get set up?

I'll start off by saying I have a bias.

I'll also say you seem to have a very good handle on things regarding where and what you want to fish and equipment considerations.

One thing to...

Re: New to fly fishing (and the USA!). Help me get set up?

Welcome to the U.S.

Either one of the set ups you've outlined will work fine. There are other options that will catch fish and cost less, as well as options that will cost alot more. Spend what...
