Re: All I want for Christmas is....

What I wanted changed pretty radically and very suddenly.

I went fishing in Maine last Wednesday. Pouring rain, but 40. Very good fishing, including the biggest brown I ever caught.

Re: Choosing the "correct" rod length.

What?

"...really need them." A concept with which I am unfamiliar.

How will the manufacturers survive if we who "...love rods in general..." start buying only what we "really need"?

Re: Fishing and One's pride

You're probably real familiar with the term 'fish story' after that.

Re: It's That Time Again, What Was Your Best Fishing Experience of 2014?

The fact that I've made 87 fishing trips so far this year - and I'm not done.

I'll be out this week at least once. I can't resist. The temperatures will be near 40 for part of the week.

Re: Driftless trip report, a little different this time.

It sounds like your rod may be too stiff for that fly.

Whenever I use a 4 wt. or 5 wt. rod and tiny flies I have the same problem.

When I use an ultralight rod (00 wt.-2 wt.), I don't.

The...

Re: A question for the fun of it ?

I have that rod.

I've tried to compare it to the Z-Axis (8' 6" 5 wt.) on a couple of outings. It's somewhat faster than the Z, but otherwise similar. It really needs to be lined up, to a 5 or...

Re: timuko ross f1 reels

I'd be surprised to learn that Ross Reels USA has any connection to the Timuko reels.

Any connection other than that Timuko copied the Ross F1, that is.

Re: Driftless trip report, a little different this time.

Sounds a lot like around here - very small (#18-#22) midges work.

On the other end of the scale, in the same water and same fish, large (#6) cone head slumpbusters also work.

Most things in...

Re: Reel weight for 691-4 Sage One?

I'd try hanging some weights from the reel seat until it balanced as I liked.

Then, I'd look for a reel in that weight range.

Re: A question for the fun of it ?

I have one - a 10' 6 wt. St Croix Legend Ultra.
I've used it a couple time this year, but I use ultralights, 00-2 wt., most of the time, so, when I use the 6 wt. it feels like a tree to me.

Re: Florida get together.

Thanks, Wolfglen. That's very helpful.

I have a 9' 8 wt. and a 10' 7 wt. I'll take those.

Also, a 13'3" 8 wt. two-hander. That'll come along, too.

Probably also a 4 or 5 wt. for lighter...

Re: Weather forecast says 'It's about to go to heck in a handbasket.'

Been there. I'm over it.

I prefer the noise of a 20KW generator.

Over Thanksgiving, with a meal to prepare, my son and his family from FL, my other son plus family, and friends, we had 15...

Re: Florida get together.

Maybe you FL guys can help me.
I'll be in St. Petersburg this winter.
What fly rods (length, weight, whatever) should I take with me? I'm guessing I'll mostly be wading, but there is the...

Re: Are rodmakers changing their product lines a little too often?

There's a simple solution.

Buy "last year's" model, often on closeout at a big discount. If it was great 'last year', it's still great this year.

Lots of things besides rods work like that. ...

Re: A question for the fun of it ?

I keep notes about the rod I used, flies, location, temps, etc.

From those notes I see that the rod I used the most this year is a Sage ZXL 8' 2 wt.

It's a lot more versatile than you'd think. ...

Re: Two of the same rod ?

Not quite 'exact'.

I have a Sage ZXL 8' 2 wt. from the factory and another built from a blank. The one from a blank is lighter, mostly in the butt section.

Also, I have a bunch (7) of Eagle...

Re: Not whining. At least not too much.

A couple of people have mentioned the size of the fly in the photos.

What you see is a pretty big fly, a #6 natural Slumpbuster. It's almost 3" long. I use ultralight rods often, so I've gotten...

Re: Tippet rings?

I use them all the time.

It makes changing tippets so much easier. I usually use the 2 mm ones, but I've seen recently that they are available in 1.5 mm.

I just ordered some of the 1.5 mm...

Re: GPS recommendations

Not quite sure what you mean.

In Google Maps, you can touch and hold your current position (where you parked) on the screen, then save it to get back later.

I've used the GPS in the iPhone in...
