Re: Good 9' 5-6 weight rod for tight line nymphing

There is no rod that can do relatively well both. You'll just get frustrated.
Decide what you want to do and get the appropriate tackle. You could get a good used tight line rod (2-4 wt, depending...

Re: 3wt floating line?

You might be able to find a SA GPX DT3 on clearance. I bought another one when it got discounted and I am keeping it for when the one on my reel dies. Highly recommend it...

Re: Vise hook keeper trick

I have been using the magnets that come with the TMC hooks for years.... a drop of adhesive is all you need.
I the hooks are of larger size, I just hang them on my bobbin holder's horizontal arm.

Re: tying questions about weighting flies

1. Wind the lead wire on the hook shank, pull the lead to the bend of the hook, brush a bit of head cement or superglue on the hook shank, than push the lead against the bead. Start your thread...

Re: Sage ESN 11' 3wt reel choices?

It takes about 6.5 oz of reel, backing, and line. You can use any reel as long as you add some lead-core (I use 14lb Cabela's) under the backing.

Re: Remove butt cap for adding weight.

This is exactly what I do to balance my outfits. I use 14 lb Cabela's lead core; it almost matches the diameter of my backing.
I was contemplating the "weight in the but" while having a custom rod...

Re: Tungsten Thread

It is actually the other way around: tungsten is about 1 1/2 times heavier than lead. I used up one spool on smaller sized nymphs as weight, but i don't use it for tying. It is good but expensive (at...

Re: Am I doing this right?

If you go for the fancy guides, handle, reel seat, etc. it might cost you more than a Sage built rod. I will have similar quality components as Sage uses, except I picked them to my liking. And I do...

Re: Gold/GPX Any Difference ?

Try a GPX in DT version...;)
I don't like Rio Gold. You have to have a rod that can handle it (most of the times under rated and extra fast)
On the other hand, I rarely fish further that 40ft. I...

Re: Euro nymphing/tight line nymphing line???

Why do you need a fly line?

When I use a setup with fly line (very rarely), I use Rio's nymphing line. Most of the times I don't have a fly line on the reel. I just tie about 100 yards of .35 soft...

In my opinion, Mr Clean's Magic Eraser is the best; just wet it and scrub gently. In 15 seconds you are done!
