Re: INEXPENSIVE Backup Recommendations

CTs are listed as medium. To me they are pretty slow rods and not good for big water. Lots of folks love them and can cast them a long ways. I can't but still find them right for small streams. ...

Re: Tactics for the dog days of summer?

Cooing off again around here again. We don't have a thermocline. Fishing has been bad slow around here, and that includes the bait flingers. Wind has been stupid lately so giving it a short break....

Re: felt sole controversy

I don't use felt soles, and not so much talking about trout streams, but boats are a much, much bigger issue IMO. I try to be very careful, but there are about 10,000 places my boat or trailer can...

Re: Tactics for the dog days of summer?

I'm laying off the bait again this year. But it's good to take somebody with flinging live bait so I can truly appreciate how inadequate I am when I can't make the fly work. Late summer is tough...

Re: New guy from Minnesota.

Welcome to the forum and where you at in MN? I've fished the Marcell area (north of Grand Rapids) for 25 years worth of vacations.

You will want to spring for a good rod or two, but go slow with...

Re: Tactics for the dog days of summer?

John

I hate to whine but the tarpon fishing in Iowa has been lame again this year. Haven't seen a bonefish or salmon in the ponds and lakes I've fished either. The wind is blowin about 20 now so...

Re: Tactics for the dog days of summer?

Thanks guys. I've mostly been leaving the trout alone, though I suppose it's not that big a deal on Iowa stocker water. I'll bring a thermometer next trip. I had no idea what water temp it became...

Tactics for the dog days of summer?

My intent was to ask about hot weather, still water, warm water species, but I'm not against trout fishing in mid/late summer when the IA DNR can stock (this years cooler weather has allowed that). ...

Re: Need some advice on an 8wt

The St Croix Imperial 8WT is another option. I base my opinion mostly from watching more experienced anglers cast my rod better than me :) They don't break and are in your price range.

I've...

Re: INEXPENSIVE Backup Recommendations

It's been quite a long time since Cabela's has been giving them away for $79.99 (over 6 months). I only say that because I am trying to sell a like new one in the classifieds, and I didn't buy it...

Re: Say wot??? $89.95?

I think quite a few on the board have this deal going on Dean. I'm about one wader or rod upgrade away myself. I'd rather buy gear than upgrade the work/fish car.

And for those who love their...

Re: Short rods for big flies?

There are at least of few of the experienced Musky anglers/guides starting to dabble with the long rods. If 8-3 was where it's at they wouldn't be reaching for 11-12 foot rods. Musky flies are...

Re: Short rods for big flies?

In my brief experience throwing big streamers, leverage is your friend. Not sure why a short rod would be a practical advantage.

Re: Cabelas fly lines

I've had good luck with some of Cabela's better stuff when on sale. That said, in my brief experience stay far, far, far, far away from anybody's low end products. It's truly false economy IMO. ...

RIO is making nippers now? Are they better than Dr Scholl's nippers?

Re: St Croix's standing in the fly fishing scheme of things

Absolutely true. Within 30 minutes of my home I can go touch 50 different models/sizes of St Croix spinning and casting rods. Gander Mountain stocks the only ST Croix flyrod I am aware of. The...

Re: Best reel for a classic trout Rod?

The Drift is my first reel I used on a CT 3WT. IMO it is too light unless you use one rated for a larger rod. Beautiful reel but the clicker drove me nuts. :)

re: Fishing Wyoming (additional photos 7/23/14)

This is a "slow" day Larry? I really need to move. :) Thanks for sharing the day. I'm jealous of the moose PICs. The Alaskan moose wouldn't sit still long enough.

Re: Best reel for a classic trout Rod?

All the reels mentioned are good choices. You really have a lot of choices. A few other brands that sell good sub $100 reels are Reddington, Okuma and Orvis. After fishing about 4 different sized...
