Re: Here you go Ard, Alaska used to be very warm ...

Really good point Fred, and one that many people are unaware of unless they've used topomaps quite a bit or set up artillery batteries back in the day.

Although off the subject, I've got...

Re: Anchor rope?

You could probably get away with a small grapel looking thing that folds up and a ring holds it, like an umbrella. But you would want to attach your chain to the wrong end of the anchor with a...

Re: Best knot for 4wt line to backing without a welded loop.

For about 35 years now, I've been using a 2 foot length of leader wire (#4 or #3 if I don't have #4 handy) bent sharply in half for tying nail knots. For me it is way more reliable than a tie fast...

Re: Is there that big of a difference? Old vs. New

In saltwater models, I think it depends on the rod manufacturer, the rod series and ocassionally, the specific rod " line-weight" rating.

Since I have 10 Sage rods ranging from 5 to 12 wts (...

Re: Getting Help

That can happen , sometimes very quickly, sometimes never. I think the sooner a newcomer gets some instruction, the better chance he has of this happening. That is providing he doesn't have...

Re: If you can get it to float you can run a river ....

Interesting for sure! There is a small, very clanish group of fishermen in Vung Tau, Vietnam who weave large baskets similar to those buffalo bowls which they waterproof with gum from various trees....

Re: Fly Hooks

Hah! One of the advantages of fishing the salt, Fred !

Gone are the days of trying to thread the needle with the aid of my tongue as the black flies discover the opening in my head net and the...

Re: Issue with larger flys

Fishing Dahlbergs with a 5 wt is too much like work in my opinion. Even with a short leader it's too much work. Pickups and laydowns with double hauls are the only way to fish high air-drag flys...

Re: Solo canoe Fly fishing?

Gruman made a short canoe for a very short while in the early '60's from a magnesium/aluminum alloy. It weighed 21 pounds and was 11 or 12 feet long. It was touted as the lightest canoe ever built....

Re: Fly fishing in Melbourne, FL

Talk with Bill at Harry Goode's. He works there part time and gives fly tying lessons there once a month on weekends. Nobody knows the wadeable waters around there better than Bill.

Tell him Jim...

Re: High end reels.

And then for salt water - there is Mako. The difference between it and all other production reels I know of is that an across the board price increase of $400 per reel resulted in lowering the...

Re: Help identifying fly reel spools

Rip,

I ran across a Pfleuger Supreme spool I didn't know I had a few months ago. It measures 3" in diameter and just over 1" outside rim to inside rim inclusive. I forget the model # but it was...

I've seen pics of some of the monster trout you've caught, Joni, which were definitely not fake.

Al got some pics our last night out of one of our forum member's landed fish.

We met up with...

Well, tarpon season is over for me now. The last two outings each resulted in two fish landed, one fought for half an hour till the tippet broke off close to the boat. I didn't fish but for a few...

Re: Circle Hooks

The circle hook tally is now 2 for 7. Two landed for 7 takes but there were likely more takes on the drift that I didn't feel and which left no tell tale abrasions on the bite tippet.

Again,...

Re: ferrule crack

Send sage an email with a link to the pics. It was your original question.

I'm wondering if it is a "Go"/ "No Go" marker for a tapered abrasive reamer, or perhaps a softer insert to make for a...

Re: 12 Weight Fly Rod Questons

Ditz,

I bought that rod in '69 when I was nearly 40 lbs heavier and way, way stronger. It took me a while to figure out how to avoid tailing loops as I'd previously been fishing bamboo and light...

Re: 12 Weight Fly Rod Questons

Ditz,

If I still had my old fenwick 12 wt. I'd have been using it last week for sure. That rod racked up quite a few tarpon and blacktips too.
