Re: Lake's goldfish infestation comes to unexpected end

Can you fly fish for goldfish or those Japanese koi that people put in ponds? I'm thinking a 1 or 2 wt, maybe a shorter tenkara. I'm sure they'd take a fly, just not sure what.

Re: Swing the Fly--The Voice of Spey

Thanks Larry. This looks interesting.

And yet another online fishing mag site to add to the list of bookmarks. My wife: "Why are so many of our bookmarks fishing websites?" Sigh.

Re: airline travel/carryon/personal item??

I've flown a number of times, including twice to Belize, with a day pack and rod tube as carry ons and never had a problem. The rod tube is a homemade job-32" of 4" black PVC pipe with a screw-on...

Re: Cigars and Fly Fishing

I do enjoy a cigar on the river, always during a break from fishing or after a day of fishing with some whiskey. Never been able to smoke when I fished--too many things to coordinate, too many...

Re: What's special about razor scissors?

They appear to have harder steel than the regular Dr. Slicks: 55 Rockwell v. 45. Also, it looks as though the blades are thinner and the edges finer. The adjustability is a neat feature.

I use...

Re: New to Fly Fishing; What Would You Do If You Had A Do Over?

Welcome to the forum.

Lots of good advice here. I think you're on the right track--if I had to start over, I would have taken a casting lesson or three so that I was doing things correctly right...

Re: Maintaining a journal

I've kept various fishing journals, all of them in Rite 'n Rain notebooks with waterproof ink. Some journals are of specific trips and are as much about the day-to-day of the trip as the technical...

Re: braided loop connectors

Welcome to the forum.

You shouldn't have a problem. I've used various brands of braided loops over the years on both double and single-handed lines/tips and never had them interfere with the sink...

Re: Whats the worst cork you've ever seen?

Another TFO here. My first spey rod was a 13' 7/8 TFO Deer Creek, and the cork on that rod was terrible. So much of it crumbled off I ended up selling it to a buddy cheap. It was a nice rod,...

Re: Fly Vise Help

Welcome to the forum.

It's a bit out of your price range, but take a look at the HMH Spartan. Made in the US, built like a tank, lifetime warranty, will last forever. Not a true rotary but I...

Re: Serious health scare for outdooorsmen

That could be pretty much anywhere in the Northwest Territories. We have swarms up here that would drive you mad.

And don't get me started on the black flies. . . .

Re: Rod sections not staying together/aligned

Lots of great advice here--I can only add my +1 for wax. I use a tea candle. Some of the spey guys wrap their joints with electrician's tape.

I like wolfglen's suggestion of removing the plug...

Re: Passed fishing 'Pard's' and our Dogs.

Sad to hear that news Fred. Hang in there man--you might not be able to beat this disease, but you're better than it is, so don't give up hope. We're all here for you and rooting' for ya.

Re: Portrait of Author Norman McLean

Thanks, Silver. That was an enjoyable read.

My favourite Norman McLean quote: "I am haunted by waters."

Pete Dexter is no slouch as a writer either. I'm not sure if he's a fly fisherman, but...

Re: easiet flies to tie for a newbie

At the risk of repeating the good advice of previous posters, wooly buggers are simple and a good starter fly. They can be tied in lots of sizes and colours, and will catch pretty much anything. ...

Re: favorite fly fishing movie

Wolfglen, I'm not really sure what kind of fly he's tying--looks like some kind of streamer or wet fly. I do recall the frog conversation--think that's Jimmy Stewart's character explaining to the...

Re: favorite fly fishing movie

"Eastern Rises" is really good. What a great adventure. Makes me want to go to Kamchatka.

Another good one is "Anatomy of a Murder". Not about fly fishing per se, but based on a novel by Robert...

Re: Magnifier needed?

I tie much larger flies for the types of fishing I do, and I use drugstore reading glasses ("cheaters"). Tried one of those magnifying lamps, but it just felt awkward and got in the way of my tying....

Re: where are the most famous place to fly fish?

Oh man. So much water, so little time. Based on my own limited fly fishing experience I'd offer the following:

--British Columbia, especially the Skeena River drainage (including the Bulkley,...

Geez Fred, I think wolfglen has the right idea. You missed out on a fantastic found-fly tying material opportunity.

Re: New tyer

+1 on Davie McPhail's videos. Very informative and I could listen to him all day long.

Zug buggin's advice is also good: start tying flies that you'll fish with on your local waters.

Re: Masked fishermen

As a pale, red-headed guy I love my Buff. Hate sunscreen and lotion-type stuff. I first bought and wore one when I went to Belize for the first time and immediately fell in love with it. A Buff...

Re: The Fly Fishing Lanyard - Pros/Cons

I use a lanyard, but only for my nippers. I made it out of paracord and an extra-large snap swivel. I just stow/stuff the nippers down my waders or into my shirt when I'm finished with them--never...
